Arnold T.Y. Chow

Arnold, age 65, peacefully passed away at home in Oak Hill, VA, on Thursday, May 17, 2018. He was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in December 2014 and fought bravely until the end.

Born on June 14, 1952 in Queens, NY, he lived in Uniondale, NY as a child with his loving Mom, Rose Jong, Dad, Jack Chow and sister, Stephanie. It was a family gathering place that started each summer with his birthday party and continued to each Jong and Chow household through the years. He attended The Gunnery in Washington, CT for high school where he found his love for literature, writing and crew. He was alumnus of University of Rochester where he met his wife, Doris. He continued his education to complete his MBA at Boston University, where he started running races being inspired by Bill Rodgers and the Boston Marathon. He later completed NYC Marathon with his dear friend, Dean.

Arnold and Doris married on April 4, 1981. They had three wonderful children, Matthew, Jessica and Kevin. His family life was full as he was deeply embedded in full activities and connections of the Chin clan. He started working in NY at FCIA. Upon moving to Virginia to work at Export-Import Bank, he became involved in his children’s sports teams as soccer and basketball coach at various times. His professional life was filled with generous people, who he befriended through their kindness. His quick wit and straightforward style made an impact. You could rely on him. He was blessed to witness his children become young adults, their college graduations, weddings of Matt and Jessica, and Jess and John. He was proud of who and what they became.

Arnold leaves a legacy of love of family and special teaching moments from hooking worms on fishhooks or one-handed basketball shots. He was a quiet, tower of strength who touched us fully.

We’ve established a Tribute Fund in honor of Arnold to assist those in their continuing fight and work in colon/rectal cancer.

  1. My sincere condolences to Arnold’s family & friends. Although I live in San Francisco, CA , I met Arnold years ago through work. He was always a pleasure to talk to. Very kind & gracious man. I was lucking to meet him in person on a few occasions and was happy that my assumption was correct, he was very welcoming with a sincere smile to boot. Truly my pleasure to have known him. I wish peace and comfort to his loved ones. God’s Speed Arnold – may you rest in peace. Kathy Lewis, S.F., CA

  2. Dear Arnold, although by name you were my brother in law, I always thought of you as a brother. You were kind, patient and never judgmental. Always there to lend a helping hand, never wanting credit or accolades. You let all the people around you shine, you were the rock, north star, wind beneath our wings. During our family vacations, you were always the first one up and made sure there was a fresh pot of coffee and breakfast waiting, with each morning coffee I will say a toast and cheer your life and the wonderful legacy you have left behind. Blessed you were in our lives .
    Judy

  7. Doris and Kevin, Matthew and Jessica, Jessie and John,

We are thinking of you and sending our love, prayers and heartfelt condolences. We join you during this time in celebrating and remembering the incredible life and legacy of one of the most incredible men we will ever know. Arnold was and will always be remembered for his love of family, strength, kindness, integrity, and friendship. We are so very privileged to call Arnold family and his smile is engraved in our hearts and minds allowing us to carry with us so many wonderful memories of him always.

While Arnold was taken from us way too early, we are fortunate that so much of who he was can be found in his children. This is one of the many gifts he has left us with and knowing that his wisdom, strength and kindness lives on in each of his children is an amazing gift left to all of us from such an incredible man. Arnold definitely knew how to invest his love, time and attention in his family and friends and this love and determination is a beacon of light for all families to live by.

We know Arnold will continue to watch over all of us from heaven and send to us, strength, love and everlasting sweet memories.

With all our love Allan, Bonnie, Anthony and Kathleen Law

  8. “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:31)

Arnold, I will always remember you as the quiet man with a heart of gold. Thank you again for letting us borrow your lawn mower after our first mower needed repairs in 2011. Thank you again for surprising my family (the kids were toddlers at the time) back in June 2012 by working with our former neighbor to clean up both of our yards after El Derecho. My husband told me what you said to him, the power was out, and “I had to do something.” Thank you most of all for helping me shovel after the blizzard of 2016 dumped more than 20 inches of snow on us. Our neighbor came to you to ask for your help, and you said yes! I had just had surgery the week before and my husband had an arm injury. It brings me to tears now knowing you probably did this when you were sick. Thank you for these small things done with great love (St. Teresa of Calcutta) and for living the Great Commandment!

My favorite memory of you will always be what happened over a year ago – I was meeting up with a mom friend at Starbucks, and you and D. walked in to get your well earned beverages. You both were smiling after having walked the two miles to get there. You both were enjoying “retirement.” But most of all, you were enjoying each other. I am so happy that you two were able to take your road trip of a lifetime last fall!

Let the peace of Christ rule our hearts as we all continue to miss you (Colossians 3:15).

  9. I’m so sorry for your recent loss. My deepest condolences to your family. Death of a loved one is never easy to endure, but you don’t have to go through it alone. You can always find comfort in our God of tender mercy Jehovah, as found at 2 Corinthians 1:3,4. May you also find comfort in the thought brought out in John 5:28,29, of being reunited with Arnold on a paradise earth.

  10. His many Eximbank friends were greatly saddened at the loss of Arnold, but will treasure their many warm memories of him.
With deepest sympathy to the family.

  11. Arnold was my first manager at EXIM Bank, and a kinder more patient person I have never known. He was both respected and loved and will live forever in the memories of those who were privileged to know him.

  12. Dear Uncle Arnold,

When I think of you, I think of you sitting on the couch watching us – your family – laughing and enjoying ourselves with the sweetest and loving smile. Thank you for always, always have been so kind to me. For always taking care of us. On behalf of all the souls in this world you have touched and leave us better than you’ve found us, thank you for everything and for all that you are.
    We love you Uncle Arnold.

“A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together – again and again”, Maya Angelou

  13. Ernie Kangas
I met Arnold at FCIA in NYC in the World Trade Center even before it was completely built; walking on plywood to the elevators. I started at FCIA in September 1973 and not exactly sure when we first met. In 1974, I was transferred to the Milwaukee, WI branch and it was sometime after that when many “telexes” were sent between us. I left FCIA in 1983 the time of Arnold went to ExIm and me to the Broker-side. It was at this time that I learned if you wanted accurate answers to ExIm questions pertaining to their policies, he was the one to ask and his answers accept. He was also one you could count on to return your telexes/faxes/emails/telephone calls the same day you contacted him. Being on the West Coast now for many years, I knew before he left his office for the night, I would hear from him. I remember he was traveling to Mexico City and I followed his trip a week later and we were calling on several of the same banks and several referred to him as Arnie vs Arnold. We then corresponded a few times as Arnie & Ernie. When I would travel to DC with some of my Insureds or for the Annual Conference, he would always make time for a meeting even if at the last minute. After his retirment, we corresponded with each other once or twice by pen and shared some of our stories and being older, he asked when I was going to retire. I enjoyed the many years of Arnold’s friendship and know he will be sorely missed by many.

  14. Doris,

Sorry to hear about Arnold’s passing. I was out of town so I could not be at the service. Though I did not know Arnold, I do know what a wonderful person you are and so he must have been a https://www.moneyandking.com/Content/Themes/Shared/Candles/candle_peace.pngvery special person to attract and married you. May his memory be a blessing for you and your family.

    Janis
