Herbert Charles Hollander (1928-2017)
Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Herbert Charles Hollander, United States Army (retired) passed on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at Reston, Hospital in Reston, Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Adrian Hollander (nee Greenberg); three children: Cheryl, Judie, and Marc; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Herb graduated from the United States Military Academy (USMA), West Point, New York, and married Adrian, June 8, 1952. He attended graduate school at Stanford University where he earned Master’s Degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
Herb is a veteran of three wars—WWII (as an enlisted soldier), Korea (1953), and Vietnam (1966). Herb retired from the United States Army in 1971 as a Lieutenant Colonel. His military awards and decorations include two Bronze Star Medals, three awards of the Legion of Merit, the Army Commendation Medal, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and numerous campaign and service ribbons.
Upon retirement from the Army, Herb embarked on a civilian career including working for the Computer Science Corporation and the Mitre Corporation. After retiring from the corporate world, Herb turned his hobby of repairing antique clocks and watches into a business. He established Vintage Time in Old Town Alexandria, VA.
A Freemason, Herb was very active in a number of Masonic organizations. He was the Right Eminent Grand Commander, York Rite, in the District of Columbia in 2014 and District Deputy Grand High Priest in 2007 of District 17 in Northern Virginia. He is a Past Master of Herndon Lodge #264 (Life Member in Perpetuity – LMIP) and Past Master of Fort Hunt—Skidmore Daytime Lodge No. 353 (then known as Skidmore Daylight Lodge) in Virginia. He was also a Past High Priest of Loudon Chapter #55 and a member of Fauquier Chapter No. 25, Royal Arch Masons of Virginia and a member of Haymarket Lodge #313 (LMIP) in Haymarket, VA. Herb was an active member of the Kena Shrine in Fairfax, VA where he was a Past Director of the Hillbilly Unit. Herb was also an active member of numerous Masonic organizations—Washington & Lee York Rite College No. 93, Piedmont Commandery Nos. 26, 2, and 3, and Columbia Commandery #2 and Washington Potomac Chapter #8, both located in the District of Columbia.
A viewing will be held at the Money & King Vienna Funeral Home on Sunday, October 15, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. with a Masonic Memorial Service beginning at 4:30 p.m. The funeral home is located at 171 West Maple Avenue, Vienna, VA 22180, 703-938-7440. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Children’s Inn at the National Institute of Health (NIH), the NIH Eye Clinic, the Knights Templar Eye Foundation Inc., or a charity of your choice.

Herb was a good and dear friend. I know he will be remembered for his wisdom, generosity, and gentle encouragement. Howard Lasser
