Joan Lane of Vienna, VA passed away peacefully at home on January 1, 2018. Beloved wife of Eugene J. Lane for 51 years; loving mother of Lenore A. Martin (Don), and Karen J. Parker (Jim); Cherished stepmother of Dan Lane (Sachi), Ricky Lane, Sr., Gary Lane (Kim); devoted grandmother of Charles Martin, Matthew Martin (Angie), Chris Parker (Holly), Michael Parker, Dan Lane (Hannah), Don Lane (Teo), Sophia Lanum (Jim), MacKenzie Lane, Dalton Lane, Ricky Lane, Jr., Courtney Fontenot, and Alexandra Lane. Also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.
Joan was preceded in death by her father Donala Miller, her mother, Margaret Simpson Miller and Joan’s first husband, Robert E. Ewald.
She was born in Rochester, NY on August 7, 1931. A graduate of the State University of NY at Geneseo, Joan taught first grade for many years in the Greece Central School District in New York State.
After moving to Virginia in 1980, she retired from teaching and devoted her time to her family. She enjoyed many happy times spent with her grandchildren.
She loved animals and had many beloved pet cats, and dogs over the years. Numerous animal rescue organizations benefited from her generous donations. Her neighborhood Bluebird Trail fledged thousands of birds over 35 years. Watching the deer, raccoons, birds, and other wildlife in the beautiful woods surrounding her home gave her much pleasure. Uncle Gene, Lee, & Karen, I just saw in the paper the passing of Aunt Joan; I am so saddened by this. We all loved her very much. She was always there to talk to on the phone when I cared for my Mom. Her love for animals is always remembered. Even tho we haven’t had contact in a couple years, she was thought of and spoken of often. She will be missed greatly. We will keep her and all of you in our prayers. Hugs yo you all……
So sorry to hear of Joan’s passing (in the Rochester NY Democrat & Chronicle on Sunday). We remember meeting her when we lived in Oakton VA and admiring her for her gentleness and caring personality. Our deepest sympathies to Gene and to the family. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Hi Gene, I just saw the obituary. I’m so sorry to see this, and so sorry I lost touch with the two of you the past few years. Joan was my favorite teacher at English Village Elementary School, and I feel privileged to have visited the two of you in Vienna and seen the bluebird trail. I have so many fond memories of her.
