Born in Youngstown, OH, he was the son of the late Howard and Marie Egerton, at age six he moved to Bowie, MD. After graduating from Bladensburg High School in 1956, he went onto establish a successful career as a Production manager with Scripta Technica, Inc. and then co-founded Hemisphere Publishing Corp. a DC publish house producing Health Science books, journals and Engineering Reference Books with emphasis on Heat Transfer. In 1985 Hemisphere was sold to Harper and Row Publishers, INC, NY, NY. Mr. Edgerton stayed on as Executive Vice President retiring in 1987.
After deciding to re-enter the workforce in retail, Joe and his spouse, the late David R. Torrey, owned Alexandria Type Co., Inc. and founded Egerton Gardens, Inc., purveyors of high-end garden fixtures, art and garden antiques. Joe went on to establish Diversities, Inc., a quality American Craft Store and acquired Arts Afire Glass Gallery in 2000. Joe retired in 2012. He served on many Old Town Alexandria Boards, KISMET, The Campagna Center BOD (two terms) and chaired Old Town’s last Decorator Show House (The Charles Goodman Property). He founded South Washington Street Merchants Association and folded it into KISMET after closing the Original Egerton Gardens Shop on S. Washington Street. He also participated in a number of retail studies for the City of Alexandria.
Mr. Egerton lived in Alexandria from 1972 until his death. He died peacefully in his home from MDS after a long illness. He leaves behind many wonderful family members and friends. Services private. Such a perfect gentleman with a heart of gold . Joe will be missed by all who knew him .
Joe will always be remembered as the most generous of heart and the kindest soul. He found a way to fill a need in very person he met and had an intuitive sense about how to help his fellow man, whether on a personal level or as a contributor to the society in which he lived, and always without judgement. May we all learn from his deep honesty, his high integrity and his absolute love of life. He leaves us with a call to our responsibilities toward our fellow human beings.
