Karen Leigh Timmons Barker

Karen Leigh Timmons Barker, 61, of Great Falls, VA, passed away unexpectedly at home on June 13, 2018. She is survived by her husband Chris Barker and their children Kit, Anna, Claire and Laura, of Great Falls; her son Ryan Taliaferro of New York City; her parents, Bill and Mimi Timmons, of Washington, DC; her mother Jean Lovegrove Stone of Anna Maria Island Florida; her sister Kim Timmons Gibson (Tom); her brother Bill Timmons, Jr (Cheryl) all of Washington; her brother Kevin Stone (Caroline) of Chattanooga TN; and many beloved nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Karen was born in Washington DC on November 16, 1956 where she attended local schools until moving to Lookout Mtn, TN where she went to Girls’ Preparatory School (GPS). She then moved to Brussels, Belgium to finish high school at The International School of Brussels (ISB). She attended Mount Vernon College, The University of TN, and Oberlin College and then worked at the international trade consulting company, Global USA.
Karen was a devoted mother, a loyal friend and a vibrant soul with a great sense of humor who enjoyed travel and the arts, but was happiest when surrounded by her large and extended family.
Karen’s Memorial Service will be at 2pm on Thursday June 21 at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Great Falls, VA at 9220 Georgetown Pike, with a reception immediately following at the church. Family will also receive friends from 7:30 -9pm that evening in the same location.

I will miss my sister’s compassion, acceptance, her wit, and our weekly correspondence as one of us would share a funny moment with the other. I’ll cherish the memories of the nightly bottle of wine we would share on my back deck during her summer visits with her family. Although her mortal self is gone, her memory will live forever with me. Rest in eternal piece, Karen.

Karen was a friend since high school…I am shocked to hear of her sudden passing. While we did not communicate often, when ever we did it was like picking up where we left off…almost always centered around our shared experience at ISB. I will miss her warm personality and insightful observations. All my best to her family and friends.

Karen, you left a swath of sunlight wherever you went. We met as teenagers but kept in touch over the years. You were truly special and my memory of you will always be cherished.
Karen was a beautiful person, one who I will never forget. I met her when we were both students at ISB, I had the pleasure to get to know her there, and to keep in touch over many many years. I was lucky enough to connect with her when we were both young parents in Virginia. I will always remember her smiling face, her sunny disposition, her uncanny way of having the right picture to post on Facebook of all of those good times during our teenage years I will always remember her, and am deeply saddened by her death. My thoughts and prayers go to all her loved ones. . She will be dearly missed.
Lovely Karen, I still can’t believe you are gone. My memories of you are full of laughter, at you as well as with you! You were a crazy, witty, funny ball of sunshine. I have great memories of us working together in the office at Camp Cody, and our visit to the Zoo in DC. Thank you Karen. Thank you for being a great friend and a great person.
