PAULINE HUGHES (Age 89)

Pauline “Paula” Hughes, a longtime resident of Annandale, VA, died peacefully on February 13th, 2018 in Herndon, VA. Beloved wife of the late John Hughes, a senior DoD executive and intelligence officer; devoted sister of John “Jerry” Veldof, Sr Jane Veldof RSM, and David Veldof; and loving mother of John (Karen), Michael (Sandra), Christopher (Melanie), and James (Marisa) Hughes.

A proud native of New Jersey, Pauline was a graduate of Trenton Central HS, where she met her future husband. Sitting in class one day in October 1945, she asked the studious red-haired boy sitting in front of her to go with her on a hayride. It was the beginning of a 47-year love story. Pauline and Jack both attended Trenton State Teachers College, wed in 1951, and were married for 41 years until Jack’s death in 1992.

A gifted K-6 educator, Pauline taught in public schools in Baltimore and Arlington in the 1950s and returned to teaching kindergarten in the 1980s and 1990s at the elementary school of her parish, St. Michael Catholic Church in Annandale. An involved citizen, Paula was active in church ministries, civic organizations, and charitable activities, including the Annandale Women’s Club and Ronald McDonald House Charities for families with children suffering serious illnesses.

Paula is also survived by 12 grandchildren—Stephanie, Melissa, and Jacqueline; Michael and Jack; Christopher, Kyle, and Danielle; and Adrian, Joseph, Noah, and Anna—and by 4 great-grandchildren, as well as many wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was devoted to her loyal neighbors and many friends-for-life in Annandale, then added another circle of friends at Tall Oaks assisted living facility in Reston, VA.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Money and King Vienna Funeral Home for visitation from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Tuesday, February 20th at 171 W. Maple Ave., Vienna, VA. A funeral mass will be offered Wednesday, February 21st at 10:30 AM at St. John Neumann Catholic Church at 11900 Lawyers Road, Reston, VA; interment will take place at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, VA at 1 PM the same day.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be offered to the Annandale Women’s Club, the Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community, Catholic Charities of Arlington, or Disabled American Veterans (dav.org).
