Richard Allan "Rick" Guggolz passed away unexpectedly on June 25 while playing his much beloved basketball.

He was born March 9, 1960 in Miami Springs, FL to Peggy and Allan Guggolz. He was a 1978 alumnus of Hayfield High School in Alexandria, VA and graduated in 1982 from James Madison University with a degree in Management. He was currently Vice-President of Drohan Management Group in Reston, VA.

Rick was an avid follower of both local and national football and basketball and a big Washington Redskins and JMU Dukes fan. He maintained many friendships from high school and college and his professional life. He loved being with his family and friends, going to the beach and playing basketball. He recently authored the 4th edition of The History of Northern Region and Virginia High School Boys Basketball. He loved music and creating CDs for family and friends.

He was a passionate collector of and amassed a vast collection of beer cans and was an avid Jimmy Buffet "parrot head." One of his favorite quotes was, "God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy." He will be dearly missed by many.

Guestbook

  1. I have worked with Rick for several years now serving together on the executive board of the American Brachytherapy Society. Rick was a wonderful honest man that created a positive atmosphere as a leader. He will be missed and my prayers to him and the family, as he is not forgotten. Firas

  2. I was fortunate to have known Rick for as long as he managed the ABS. When I think of Rick, words such as kind, gentle, peaceful, easy to work will come to mind. It is hard to believe that he is no longer with us but I can almost be certain that he is in a better place. May God bless his soul and provide peace and strength to his family and friends to cope with such a loss. We will miss you Rick.

  3. I met Rick through my affiliation with the Association of Insurance Compliance Professionals (AICP). When I became national President, he was always there to answer my many, many stupid questions – and was always willing to laugh at my stupid jokes. He always put everyone at ease and was kind to everyone he met. I will miss him very much.

  4. It was my privilege to have known Rick as a Brother PiKapp. Always smiling & laughing. He constantly sang Eddie Money’s “two tickets to paradise” song. The Lord has punched his ticket and I know he is in a better place with a refreshment in one hand and an endless Eddy Money Loop playing in the background. RIP Rick. Heartfelt Sympathy to the Guggolz family. PB

  5. I am still in shock over the sudden loss of Rick. I have such fond memories of working with him at DMG, receiving his musical CD’s at the end of they year and receiving his check in facebook posts. Always positive, always sweet and Rick had a way in making you feel like he was your biggest cheerleader. I will miss him so. I send my deepest and most sincere condolences to Kelly, Bryan, Regan, his parents and all those who are grieving during this difficult time. May his memory be eternal. RIP Sweet Rick….

  6. Rick was truly one of the nicest guys I have ever known. We were acquaintances at Hayfield HS (he was a year ahead of me) through sports, but became close friends at JMU. Guggz was my “big brother” while I was pledging Pi Kappa Phi, and he took me under his wing- as he did with many others. Rick was funny, smart, kind, and had a charisma that seemed to enter a room ever before he did. When you were around him you could not help but feel good with his ever present smile and awesome laugh. He and I had only seen each other a couple of times since those crazy early 80’s at JMU. But, when we did, he made me feel as if I was 19 years old again without a care in the world. I will always treasure the many memories I have of Guggz. As I read these beautiful tributes, we all know his legacy will live on and remain in our hearts forever. Donna and I wish to pass along our sincere condolences to Kelly, Bryan, Regan, Gary, Lori, and all of Rick’s family and friends. Dave Scott Chapel Hill, NC

  7. Rick and family, My thoughts, prayers and wishes for peace and healing go out to you at this time of sorrow. We’re all feeling the profound loss of a great man, friend and fellow Hawk. Our arms are wrapped around you in comfort. Hawks fly free. Hugs and love. V

  8. Rick and I met 39 years ago and weve shared so many great memories from pledging the fraternity, Spring Breaks in Florida, road trips, concerts, footballs games, golf outings, Homecomings and reunions. Anything that involved Rick was sheer fun and filled with an abundance of laughter. We all remember Rick as a funny guy with his one liners and abundant use of puns. And he was funny and quick witted, but he was much, much more. He was a kind man, a loving husband and father, a caring brother who was always there when you needed an encouraging word, pat on the back, or his long arms of support. I will miss him. Kelly, Bryan, and Regan may peace be with you. Mr. and Mrs. Guggolz, thank you! Rick, rest in peace until we meet again!

  9. Ricky was a wonderful neighbor when I was an 11 year old growing up in Honolulu, Hi. Our families had many good times, but I remembered Ricky (as he was called then) and my brother playing on a baseball team together. He was a kind person and I don’t think I ever saw him get cross with anyone. He will be missed by many and I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to know him. My family sends their sympathy.

  10. a prayer for the soul of the faithful departed, may he be found resting comfortably in the arms of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus, and a payer for his loved ones, may they carry on in the strength of His love. — Hayfield ’77

  11. I am so sorry that my last words to Rick were during the 2017 annual meeting of the American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) in Boston a few months ago. He was very professional and experienced in his role as Vice President of Drohan Management Group and Senior Account Executive for the ABS. I had known Rick since 1996 in trying to analyze the raw data from the Abt 1995 study for the MedPhys work values report (Drohan managed ACMP before his management of the ABS). Rick knew most everyone in the ABS by name and was key for balance and productivity with Melissa. We are devastated by his untimely death; he was so young and with vigor. My heart goes out to his dear wife Kelly, his two children, immediate family, and extended family. I will hold cherished memories of Rick Guggolz for my remaining days.

  12. I am so very sorry to hear about Rick. We were classmates at Hayfield High school and I enjoyed catching up with him at the various reunions we had. He truly was one of my very favorite people, ever. I can’t be at the service for him, I live in Charlotte and have commitments but I will be there in spirit. I am also a Parrot head and wish I could think of an appropriate JB phrase right now and I can’t, I’m just so sad. He was one in a million.

  13. I am so deeply saddened and shocked to learn that Rick has left us. Ive known Rick since 2007 in conjunction with my involvement with the Association of Insurance Compliance Professionals as a regional director, conference planning chair and national president. In the many AICP board meetings we attended, I discovered that he was so much more than an Executive Director on our Board, he was absolutely a dear friend to so many people. Friendly, outgoing, funny, super-efficient and organized, he touched so many lives not by ~what~ he did for AICP, but how he did it. Rest in Peace, Rick. I shall treasure the mix tape forever. I am unable, sadly, to attend the services, but I send love, peace and prayers to Ricks loving family.

  14. At this time of loss and sadness, I pray the good Lord will provide comfort, blessings, and encouragement to the Guggolz Family. Rick was loved and respected by so many. As a Pi Kappa Phi brother, he will be missed more than words can convey.

  15. I have been a friend of Rick’s for 35 years now. We lived together and have shared countless great times together along with many of our other close fraternity brothers and other friends. Sadly, I will be with many of you Friday to say goodbye. I will always remember and think of Rick as one of my best friends. He made his family and our close circle of friends better. Thanks to Rick for being with us through the years.

  16. My deepest sympathy and prayers to the Guggolz family. I know and have worked with Rick through the Association of Insurance Compliance Professionals through my annual conference committee responsibilities and on the National Board. Rick was a true professional and liked by all that came in contact with him. I was truly honored to have known Rick. May the Blessed Lord guide you through this very difficult time.

  17. My sincere sympathy to Rick’s family & friends. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I knew Rick through AICP and many board meetings & conferences over the years. He was always upbeat, quick with a joke and a great smile & welcoming & friendly to all. He will be sincerely missed by his AICP family too.

  18. Like so many others, I met Rick through the AICP. Besides his professionalism, his personality and his smile, I will always remember him for his thoughtfulness. For example, he would email me to make certain my family and I were okay if he heard there were weather issues in my area, as well as for various reasons. My prayers and thoughts are with his family at this time.

  19. Guggolz family I am so terribly sorry for the loss of Rick so suddenly and way too early. I pray that you find comfort that everyone he touched was a better person for knowing him. He was so kind and supportive and made you laugh. Laughter is good for the soul. He made you feel special. He was a high school friend and a fellow JMU’r. Go Dukes! He loved both schools, friends and sports. If he had to go so soon, it was doing what he loved. Rick we will miss your quips, your quick wit and your love of life. You just made heaven a better place and left a hole here on earth. We will miss you.

  20. I remember Rick best as a child at our family dinner gatherings at Thanksgiving and Christmas. He and his siblings and cousin were always fun to be around. Last time I talked to him was at his grandmothers memorial in East Point. Such a fine young man and father and like his dad, so personable! I know he will be sorely missed. I know you all are leaning heavily on our heavenly Father and that he will see you through this trying time. God bless you all.

  21. Rest in peace “Gugg”until we meet again. The Wilkerson family wish to pass along our prayers and condolences to Kelly,Bryan,Regan Mr.& Mrs.Guggolz and all of Rick’s family and friends.

  22. From The Fin Man. My real name is Dave Facinoli, a fraternity brother of the great Rick Guggolz at James Madison University. Back in college on a soggy fraternity party-room dance floor one weekend night, Rick somehow dubbed me with the nickname of The Fin Man, with emphasis on the The. It caught on. Some still call me that today, some 36 years later. That was Rick, one of the funniest people I was lucky enough to have known. He had scads of one liners and clever nicknames for so many. That can be verified by asking other fraternity brothers. It was a proud honor to own. If Rick nicknamed you, he liked you. What a special person to have known and so sad for his loss. No doubt, though, Rick Guggolz will continue to make all of us laugh, smile and think of the lighter side from where ever he resides. Rick had that wonderful ability. From The Fin Man.

  23. During my time as board member then President and Board Chair of the ABS, Rick was my teacher, mentor, and friend. Though he would be too humble to take the credit, all of us at ABS know that his tireless work over many years has helped thousands of cancer patients throughout the world. He will be deeply missed. My condolences to his family and friends.

  24. We extend our deepest sympathy to Kelly, Bryan and Regan. Also to our dear Cameron friends Al and Peggy and to Lori and Gary beloved sister and brother and your families. We know you will miss Rick so very much. He was a rock for the whole family. He came honestly by his love of life and sense of humor. Traits he inherited from both his parents. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Dottie and Jon Holstine

  25. Kelly, Bryan, Regan & family, We are deeply and sincerely sorry for the sudden loss of your loving husband and dad. There are no words to take away your pain, but know that we will keep you close in our thoughts, prayers, and hearts. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. ~ Anonymous Tom, Janet, Lauren & Jillian

  26. Peggy and Al, so sorry to hear about your son. I remember them all as young children at Cameron Methodist Church. Your family will be in my prayers Take care of yourselves

  27. I met Rick in the summer of 1973 at the Pike Branch Pool in Wilton Woods. One day, someone slammed a car door – particularly hard – and Rick yelled out – “MY LEG.” Everyone’s head snapped to the parking lot – Rick smiled. During our years at Hayfield, Rick and I worked summers for a local home builder. It was probably during that time Rick started his beer can collection in my sister Suzanne’s apartment above the O’Shaughnessy’s garage. Grolsch was inexpensive – came in a huge can and tasted great. Then there was Fosters and then… I knew him well and for a long time and I submit that Rick (or “Ricardo” as I called him) was the best husband, father, sibling, son and friend. Until we meet again my friend – Stuart Herder

  28. As a Past President of AICP, I became aware of Rick trough that organization. I will always remember his enthusiasm and far reaching smile. He was a true professional who made everything personal. I am fortunate to have know him for so long. I greatly grieve with all his family too! Know that you are kept in my thoughts and prayers and know that you can never loose your memories of Rick. Pictures can alway be a fond memory, but the memories locked away in your hearts will see you through this very tough time. May God keep each of you and may he hold you in his hand, comforting and soothing you in your time of deepest need. God Bless each of you and know you have my deepest sympathies!

  29. I met Rick in high school when I was the new kid as a junior. We became friends and he introduced me into a larger group at Hayfield. Mike Fogarty and I teasingly called him the ‘Social Chairman’ because he would organize get togethers whether it was in high school, college, or afterward. For our bunch back then, it usually included basketball followed by a bar. Many friends talk about coming together but can’t quite make it happen. Rick always made it happen with the necessary phone calls, emails, and messages. He planned the time and place and we showed up. All groups of friends should be so lucky. God bless you Kelly, Bryan, and Regan. My deepest sympathies Al, Peggy, Lori, and Gary. I cannot imagine the loss you feel. Rick was a very good man taken too soon and he will be missed.

  30. To the Guggolz family, from my wife Jane and I, our prayers are with you during this difficult time. Guggz – weve known each other since freshman year at Hayfield. So many great memories. Cruising in your dads station wagon with the crew drinking beer before the football games and listening to The Boys are Back in Town. Ever the organizer, you always reached out to everyone. Ill never forget when you called me at Radford from JMU, Cunn, its Guggz, me and some of my boys are coming down for the RU Halloween party! And when weve run into each other occasionally over the past few years, the old inside jokes came back never missing a beat. Guggz, you brought happiness to a lot of people and you made us all laugh, something I will never forget. So tonight, when Im out on my deck tipping a cold one on this beautiful summer evening, Ill be listening to Jimmy Buffet and having a toast to you my friend. May peace be with you and your family.

  31. The heart remembers most what it has loved best. Keeping the Guggolz family in our prayers.Rick will be missed by all.

  32. To the Guggolz family, We are Carolyn and Mike Terrill formerly of Hayfield Farms, Alexandria, Virginia. Our children Michael, Mischael, Mark, and Marshall went to school with Rick. Rick was a delightful young man who was smart, witty, and respectful. Our hearts are broken for your family as you grieve the loss of your precious husband, father, son, brother, sister, uncle and friend. Our prayer is that you are comforted to know that Rick is in the everlasting arms of the One who created him for eternity. We are reminded in 1 Corinthians 2:9 “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those that love him.” Our family will miss being with you, but by the time we found out we could not work out the logistics. Heaven will be brighter and the earth will be dimmer without Rick Guggolz in it. Respectfully, Carolyn and Mike Terrill and Family Mesa, Arizona

  33. Rick touched so many lives with his warm caring heart, I feel blessed to have known him and his wonderful family during my high school and college years and they will forever be in my heart. His passing will leave a void in the lives of all who had the benefit of knowing him. May God bless and comfort his family during this time.

  34. Deepest Sympathies to Kelly, Bryan, Regan, Mr. & Mrs. Guggolz, Gary and Lori. Rick was a singular force of nature. There are many words and characteristics to define him but his humanity will always stand out to me. Rick loved life, was always ready for an adventure and the subsequent retelling of said adventure, was funny and he was sensitive. In short, Rick had the ability to make real and lasting connections as is evidenced by his contacts with friends from middle school through high school through college and through his professional career. Not many people achieve that. Rick, you’ll be missed by so many but we are enriched and fortunate for having you in our lives. Godspeed, my friend!

  35. Kelly, Brian, and Regan, There are no words that can express my sympathy and empathy. You are in my prayers. Although I never had the opportunity to meet Rick, the tribute shares what a beautiful person he is and a loving husband and dad. The days and years ahead will be difficult; don’t hesitate to lean on those around you. Celebrate Rick’s life and the time you were blessed to be together. Know that he will ALWAYS be part of who you are. God bless you all.

  36. Peggy. Al, Kelly and children – I can not convey the sympathy I feel for you. Praise God, Rick was a good Christian and did a lot for God and his community. I look back to time when he was at Cameron – Lindy said Rick was Markita Fowler’s prom escort at Hayfield. My prayers for peace and comfort are with you and I know that Rick is in God’s loving arms. Blessings to all of you. Ruth

  37. I knew Rick for many years through the AICP. He was funny, upbeat, vibrant — the world is diminished by his loss. My deepest sympathy to his family.

  38. My deepest sympathy goes out to all those that knew and loved Rick. My wish is that my condolences may ease some of the pain and loss felt by his wife, children, and immediate family. The true mark of any individual is how much their lives touched ours bringing out the laughter, love, and friendship to all those that Rick knew. I wish that I could turn back time and relive those moments when Rick was with us; however, I am glad that I have those memories to sustain me at this time. For all that knew Rick, take comfort in the fact that his life touched yours and that you are a better person for it. I will keep Rick’s memory alive in my thoughts and prayers.

  39. My deepest condolences Kelly to you, Bryan and Regan. Know that we have you in our thoughts and prayers.

  40. Kelly, My deepest condolences for you and your family, you are the best person did I know, your daughter your son and you are in my prayers, only God know what happened and reasons Peace and resignation for you and your children

  41. Kelly, Bryan and Kelly, there are no words that can express how sorry we are for your loss. I always loved spending time with Rick when we were working the concessions at the high school basketball games, I could always count on a good laugh when he was there. Your entire family is in our thoughts and prayers. Rick will missed by all who knew him.

  42. Dear Kelly and family, My thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time. Keep Rick’s memories close to your heart and know that we are all here to support you.

  43. We are so sorry for your loss. We are praying for your family and will keep you in our thoughts. God Bless and may God be with you and watch over you during this difficult time and always. The Wheeless Family.

  44. Dear Kelly, Bryan and Regan, I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  45. I am are so sorry for your loss. I am praying for your family and will keep you in my thoughts. God Bless and may God be with you and watch over you during this difficult time and always.

  46. Dear Kelly, Bryan and Regan – all of us in Rick’s basketball brotherhood are still in a state of shock over Sunday’s game. Rick was a force on the court and a gentle giant off the court. We will all miss the baby hook shot and the immovable object pick, the travel bag that always included music and the guide to northern VA high school basketball history. Most of all we will miss Rick’s sense of humor, his contagious smile and the way he always “felt strongly both ways” about senseless arguments the fellas would get involved with. I will think of him every time I step onto that basketball court. Rest in peace Big Rick.

  47. Kelly and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Rick was a great friend and I will miss him a lot. He always lit up a room as soon as he entered it. God bless,Greg Benson

  48. We extend our deep condolences during this week of sorrow to you Kelly, Regan and Brian. You are blessed to have loving family nearby to support you. Nathan & Pat Berkley

  49. Dear Kelly, Bryan and Regan, I wanted to say hello today at the funeral however there were simply so many friends/family around you that I didn’t want to interrupt. I am so very sorry about Rick and actually am still in shock. Over the past 17 years he was not only a co-worker but a friend. Rick was always so supportive of me and it truly meant a great deal to me. DMG will not be the same without him and we will all miss him very much. Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers. Rest in Peace Rick, you will be missed! Rhonda

  50. My deepest condolences to Rick’s family. Rick was such a great person and a great friend. I got to know him through the AICP and we worked together on many AICP conferences. He was so supportive and always available to answer questions or listen to my ideas. We shared a common interest in and love for music; he burned several CD’S with a wide variety of music for me, something I’ve learned he did for many others. I’ll cherish those forever, as much as I will cherish his friendship. Rick’s passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill and he will be sorely missed. Rest in peace my friend.

  51. As we go through life, it seems to me that sometimes we miss people by just a sliver. And so it goes with the Delta Taus of Pi Kappa Phi. Maybe you are an older brother who graduates just before a younger brother pledges. Maybe you are a younger brother who just missed getting to know a brother who has gone before you. But that is our legacy, that is how we are connected. Events happen, stories are told and passed along. The stories become history, history becomes legend, and legend becomes myth, fueling memories that get tucked away and cherished for a lifetime. Those of us who had the opportunity to know Rick Guggolz, who grabbed on to Rick as our paths crossed, how very blessed we are. Time and distance precluded me from seeing Rick often in our days since JMU, but in more recent years it was great to see him at the occasional golf outing and at JMU football tailgates. Though I didn’t see Rick as much as I would’ve liked over the years, I take great comfort in knowing that many of you were with him every step of the way. Along with you, I mourn his departure from this earth, and pray for your healing. As I read Facebook, emails, and texts, there is hardly a post that doesn’t mention how Rick lit up a room. Indeed, if Rick was in our presence today, he would encourage us, make us laugh. And I think he might do so by telling a story (as he often did) that might sound something like this: “Hey, what’s this laying around stuff! What? Over, did you say over? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no, and it ain’t over now! Cause when the going gets tough………………………………………………………….the tough get going! Who’s with me! Let’s go!” We didn’t know it at the time, but there’s a parable in the story. It’s not over. We will see Googz again. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers.

  52. Dear Kelly, Bryan and Regan: The Carey family is so sorry to hear about Rick’s passing. He was such a bright shining star on earth and always had a kind word to say. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. All of his Hayfield classmates will miss him terribly and will always keep him close to our hearts.

  53. My sincerest condolences at your loss, Kelly, Bryan and Regan. Rick was a friend from high school who was always kind, funny, and warm. He’s left such a positive impact on this world and will be missed. My thought and prayers of peace and comfort to all of you. May God bless you and keep you in his arms.

  54. Kelly, Bryan, and Regan, My sincere condolences to you, your family, and friends. I had the privilege of working with Rick at DMG for over 20 years and considered him both a friend and colleague. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Kathy and Kevin Hoskins
