William P. Scanlon

William “Papa” P. Scanlon, 80, passed away August 3, 2017 in his McLean, Virginia, home after a life well lived. After several weeks of hospice care and visits from loved ones, Bill passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side.

He leaves his wife, Marty Scanlon; son Bill; son Bryan and wife Jennifer, grandsons Zach, Andrew, Luke, Mike and granddaughter Hannah.

Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on March 30, 1937, he was the only son of William and Helen Scanlon. Bill rocked the accordion in a high school rock band when accordions were cool and people actually knew what an accordion was. Right after high school graduation he joined the army as a radio technician often recalling throughout his life how hot it was at his base in Ft. Polk, Louisiana.

Providence College was next up making him a Friar for life and giving him the diploma needed to get a job. His early work years were spent in the insurance business, but Bill made his mark with decades of service helping others get help in the Hearings and Appeals Division of the Social Security Administration.

Never the longest off the tee, Bill was known for his chipping and putting around the green where he enjoyed a lifelong love of playing golf with his best friends. “Ducks around the world now rejoice!” as his annual “Duck Dinners” with friends who became more like family are officially no more, but the memories and laughter will continue to live on. Never one to be without a hobby, Bill returned to an earlier passion of watercolors and copied, created and painted many pieces of artwork over the years.

Best known as a devoted family man, Bill was proud to be a husband to Marty for over 50 years, father to two strong and independent boys and Papa to five grandkids who he enjoyed immensely.

A memorial service will be held at Money and King Funeral Service on Sunday, August 13,, 2017 from 2 to 4pm. Funeral mass will be on Monday, August 14, 2017 at 11am at St. Mark Catholic Church in Vienna, VA. A private family burial will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2017.

In lieu of flowers a donations can be made to the Goodwin House Foundation to help others less fortunate in their last days. https://www.goodwinhouse.org/goodwin-house-foundation/
