Albertina Flores Ponce
August 23, 1928- October 30, 2025
Albertina (Tina) Flores Ponce passed away peacefully with her daughter and son-in-law after a brief illness in Herndon, VA. Born and raised in Flores Comayagua, Honduras, she came to the United States to pursue the American Dream. She started as a nanny and evolved to be a cook and housekeeper in Greenwich, CT, where she spent almost thirty years working for Mr. and Mrs. Joseph V. Quarles. She loved to sew and grew her independence by learning how to drive. She raised her daughter, Tita, in Greenwich and learned to navigate the Merritt Parkway and 84 to visit her daughter at UCONN. She was a breast cancer survivor.
She retired at 80 and moved to Virginia to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She “worked” at Food for Others as a volunteer and never missed a Widow or Widowers event at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church (OLGC), where she was a devoted parishioner. She travelled to Hawaii and Italy with OLGC. She also loved to travel with James and Tita to places such as FL, Ohio, CT, NY, NC, and GA. One of her favorite trips was visiting Europe with her daughter. During Lent, you could find her volunteering by pumping the keg at the annual fish fry for the dredge and also drinking some. She also was an active visitor at the local senior centers.
Tina leaves behind her daughter, Tita (Ponce) Brett, son-in-law, James C. Brett, and niece Maria Magdalena Ponce de Ponce, and nephew Jorge Flores. She has family in Deltona, FL to include Justine Hendron and Isabelle Hendron who she loved deeply. She has additional family in MD to include the Alonzo family who she loved to hang out with. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and family in Honduras. She was predeceased by her husband, Jose Ernesto Ponce Rodriguez, her siblings, Teresa Hernandez, Raquel Hernandez, Saturnino Flores, and Jose Flores, and twin children.
Tina will be remembered for her cooking skills, such as grilled steak, tamales, sweet Honduran bread, and ziti and her loving smile. She will be remembered by many who called her “Mamacita.” She was devoted to her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to either Food for Others, a local food bank, or Life with Cancer (Fairfax, VA).
