Resided in: Alexandria, Virginia

Andrew Martin Townsend, age 56, of Alexandria passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025, at INOVA Alexandria Hospital. He was born on July 13, 1969, in Washington, DC. Andy was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Penny Townsend, and his brother CJ. Andy grew up in Vienna, Virginia and spent his childhood playing baseball, riding his bike, and exploring the outdoors, which he loved. He was a proud James Madison University Duke with a degree in Computer Information Systems. He began his career in the burgeoning industry of information technology and continued his IT work supporting government and school systems.
Andy’s love of the outdoors continued throughout his life, just recently trying kayaking. Decades ago, he met the love of his life, Amanda. Together they built a life of love for each other, their families, their friends, and their beloved kitties. He and Amanda shared a passion for the beach, mountains, spotting birds and wildlife, and travel. When they weren’t volunteering their weekends for rescue animals, Andy loved watching football, playing cards and boardgames, and Sunday dinner with his family.
Andy was a news junkie and would read multiple sources daily. He was also deeply interested in the stars, planets, and space exploration. To Andy, stars weren’t just points of light, they were stories waiting to be discovered and mysteries to be unraveled.
Andy is survived by his beloved Amanda, her brother Don and his wife Colleen, her nephew Ethan, and mother-in-law Susan. He is also survived by his sister Nancy, her husband Jason, his niece Kelsey, his great niece Sybil, his sister-in-law Eva, and nephews Liam and Sean. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Homeward Trails Animal Rescue at www.homewardtrails.org.
