Ann Phelps Jacoby

Ann Phelps Jacoby, widow of Frederick W. Jacoby (USAF RET), daughter of Anna Belle and Howard Mattoon Phelps, and long time resident of McLean, Virginia died at home on April 18, 2014. She had Congestive Heart Failure.
Ann was born in Washington, DC on November 30, 1923. Her maternal grandparents and many aunts and uncles lived in Northwest Washington, and the young family resided in Wardman Park Hotel. In 1928 the family moved to Bay Side, Long Island. They spent summers in Camden, New York, to avoid the heat, polio and the flu epidemics in the city.
She graduated from Bayside High School where she was a class officer and editor of the yearbook. She entered Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts in September of 1941 and the US entered WWII later that year. Ann graduated with a degree in Economics in 1945. The four years were defined by WWII, and Ann was always ready with humorous stories about the social scene during that time.
While at Mt. Holyoke, she was introduced to Fred Jacoby, a cadet at West Point Military Academy. They were married July 19, 1947. Fred followed a military career, and one of the first tours was to Paris for three years, where ANN mastered French and took cooking lessons at the Cordon Bleu, and acquired a French Poodle named Zipper. Only once did the family live on an airbase, from 1969 to 1971 at Barksdale AFB in Shreveport, LA. The family lived in Bangkok, Thailand for two years, 1967-1969. Fred retired from the military in 1971 and they moved to McLean, Virginia. Fred worked for the engineering firm HNTB and then for George Washington University. During this time Ann continued to be an active volunteer. She trained to be in the first class of docents at the Hishhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (1974) and retired as docent emeritus. She also became a Kingsbury Tutor, trained at the Lab School and then worked privately as a tutor. From 1975-1982 she worked in the business office at the Potomac School in McLean, Virginia. Bridge, travel and spending summers at her Camp in Camden, NY were activities they shared once Fred retired. Ann was actively involved in her grandchildren's lives, including finding enrichment activities at the Hirschhorn Museum, making 'treasure hunts,' watching them on the pond of the Camp, and viewing movies together.
An active member of the Lewinsville Presbyterian Church since 1972, Ann was also a member of the PEO Chapter of Alexandria, the Ivy League Bridge Club, McConnellsville Garden Club (NY), attended the McLean Symphony Orchestra concerts, and was a great fan of Colin Firth.
She is survived by her daughter, Martha Jacoby Krieger and her long-term partner Gerard L. Hawkins, and grandchildren Benjamin L. Krieger and Katherine P. Krieger; and her son, Robert P. Jacoby and daughter-in-law, Alison Hiatt Jacoby and their children Cortland H. Jacoby, Leelee P. Jacoby and Charles A. Jacoby.
The family will receive friends at Money & King Funeral Home, 171 W. Maple Ave, Vienna, VA on Thursday, April 24 from 5 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held at Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, 1724 Chain Bridge Road, McLean, VA on Friday, April 25 at 10:30 am. Interment private.
