Ann Thomas Streit
Of McLean, VA passed away peacefully at her home on August 6, 2024.
Ann was born on July 28, 1927, to Edwin George Thomas and Stella Selby Thomas, in Orange, NJ where she lived until her marriage in 1950 to John Paul Streit, a West Point graduate and career Air Force pilot. Their courtship was short, their marriage long and rich, and treasured by both until John’s death in 2021.
Very early in their marriage and as a new mother to their 3-month-old son, Jep, Ann bravely endured John’s absence for nearly two years after his plane was shot down in Korea and he was held as a prisoner of war.
Military life was uprooting, yet Ann excelled in managing the many moves, using her creativity and energy to make each new residence feel like home. After John’s retirement from the Air Force, she launched her own career with her friend Jeanne Reilly, founding the highly successful Upper Crust Restaurant and Elegant Attic Lounge in Fort Walton Beach, FL.
Survivors include her three children, Jep Streit, Laurie Bradford and Kim Wild; her grandchildren Joshua, Will, Zachary, Grace and Nathan; her step-grandchildren John and Becca; and great-grandchildren Jadon, Lina, John, Rosalind and Brynn.
Family and friends are invited to attend Ann’s memorial service on Saturday, October 19th at noon at the Church of the Holy Comforter, 543 Beulah Road NE, Vienna VA, followed by a reception on site. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will occur at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Wounded Warrior Project, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

I live in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County, and when reading the Washington Post the other day, Ms. Streit’s photo caught my eye as I turned the page onto the obituaries. I didn’t know her, but on a whim, I stopped to read about her and was surprised to learn that her life had touched mine. My parents retired in Shalimar, Florida and when it was open, the Upper Crust was a favorite dining spot for us. My mother and I especially enjoyed lunching there. Even today, when I’m back in Fort Walton visiting my Dad, I always think of the Upper Crust and our good times there when we drive by its old location on Racetrack Road. Thank you, Ms. Streit, for the fine dining experiences of yore and the fond memories today!
