Bernard Vincent Joiner
July 13, 1942 ~ January 12, 2021
It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my father on January 12, 2021. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, caring brother, and an amazing friend to many. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. During this difficult time, my family is thankful for your support, sympathy and prayers.
A longtime resident of Vienna, VA, my father was born in Pensacola, Florida. He earned bachelor and master’s degrees at Louisiana State and George Washington Universities. As an engineer and project manager with several assignments overseas, he developed a love for travel and an appreciation for the opportunity to make new acquaintances wherever he went.
My father was an active parishioner at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Vienna and a longtime member of the Ski Club of Washington D.C.

I remember Bernie for so many things but I remember the hot tub parties he had at his home in the ‘ eighties for Ski Club friends. And his wife was so delightful to put up with all our shenanigans. Rest well, friend. You touched many lives!
You will be missed Bernard, Uncle B. We all enjoyed your stories at family gatherings and your delicious desserts that you loved to bake. Peace.
Tío te extrañaremos. Siempre serás recordado, que descanses en paz.
Bernie was a wonderful friend and sailing partner. He taught my first sailing class with the ski club, and we had many day sails on the Bay over the years. He was a generous man with his time and his energy and will be missed.
First trip I did with the ski club was a sailing trip to the Bahamas and Bernie was there. Years later he taught me a refresher on sailing which regenerated my interest in boating. Rest well my friend.
Bernie has been my friend since we met in the Washington Ski Club in the late 1970’s. I remember being at many of his annual Superbowl parties, even though I’m not a football fan, but he always assured me that non-football people were welcome, and the upstairs-downstairs house had room for everyone. He was so active and friendly, running the Ski Club’s sailing program for years, hosting hot tub and potluck dinner parties, and always interested in being together with friends. I last spoke with him in the summer of 2020, when I called to wish him a happy birthday, and he said we would get together when the pandemic was over. He was such a good friend, and it’s hard to believe he’s gone. Sue A.

Bernie was a great organizer and had a knack for bringing people together. I remember well going on his trip to Taos. In addition to skiing we also had a great day in Santa Fe. Later, I took his basic sailing course. He was a good friend and teacher. He will be missed. Fare winds and following seas my friend.
I had the honor and pleasure of meeting Bernie when he participated in the OLGC Compassionate Friends group after the passing of his wife. I appreciated how he would always give me suggestions on how to make our group better, helping all those who participated. I frequently saw him at church, and he was always such a gentleman and so kind to me. I will miss him.
A candle was lit for the decedent.
It is with great sadness to learn of Bernie’ passing. We shared many moments both personal and professional during his association with Page and the reunions we had and I will truly miss his sincere friendship. Jack Greve
It was my pleasure to work on several international projects with Bernie Joiner when we both worked at Page Communications. He was an extremely talented engineer and program manager and was always a delight to work with. Bernie always seemed to be in good spirits even when under stress. He will certainly be missed. My sincere sadness at the passing of Bernie. I met Bernie dancing. When I went to the dance for the first time, he was one of the first persons to act kind and friendly to me. I remember ever time we danced he had such a pleasant attitude and smile for me. He was always happy and sweet. What a loving man I thought. He will be missed very much in the dancing community.
I was fortunate enough to have worked with Bernie in building a system in a remote area of Northern Peru from the Amazon Rain Forest, over the high Andes and across the northern Peruvian desert to the Pacific Coast. It was difficult technical challenge and I was fortunate to be able to work with such a keen intellect as we made our way along that torturous, dangerous and roadless path, supported by Peruvian Air Force Helicopter squadrons. On that route we ran into many Indians in primitive villages and weather as Bernie and I had never seen. After several redesigns where we found the terrain to not be as we were told, the system worked, the customer accepted it and we went home. Thank you Bernie . Tom Minton

Bernie, so sad to hear you left us. We knew each other since 1996. You were a such kind and fun person. I was so glad to be your friend and appreciated all the help you gave me. We were happy to see you on our office’s virtual Christmas party. Our last call was to promise to have lunch together again after the pandemic. Now, I wish you had peace and joy in the heaven. We will miss you a lot! Kim
Bernie will be missed. I think what he will be remembered for the most was bringing sailing instruction to the Ski Club if Washington, DC (a club with many activities besides skiing). Sometimes he held classes at his own house. He was also in charge of the club’s Recreation program for many years, in addition to leading some major ski trips. He was always willing to help people.
Bernie Joiner was my brother-in-law. He married and dearly loved my wife’s sister Gluddy, and they raised an amazing son Andrew. Bernie was so friendly and always a good host. He was an engineer and everything he said and did was so logical. He bought a large, nice house in a beautiful neighborhood just before he got married and it served him and his family for all of his life. His wedding was well planned and one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. We enjoyed so many visits to see him and his family on many holidays. We enjoyed a trip to Puerto Rico with him and Gluddy, one of her last vacations before she sadly passed away. I do not think Bernie ever completely got over her passing. We are sad for his passing and hope he can rest in peace aside his beloved Gluddy and all the family and pets they ever had together.
Wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts.
I met Bernie many years ago at a dance class. He was very friendly and made me feel very welcome. Over the years, I have joined him and others sailing together on the Potomac River where he skippered the sail for the SCWDC and have also attended numerous super bowl parties at his home. Bernie has also been on many international trips with my travel group to include Australia & New Zealand, Costa Rica, Thailand, Cuba and the last, Hawaii in November 2019. He was such a kind, gentle, friendly and well liked person by everyone. He will be dearly missed for sure. May he rest in peace.
May you forever enjoy fair winds Bernie. In loving memory from your sailing friends RoseAnna & Ebbe Hassl
I remember Bernie from all the ski trips and sailing trips and his own superbowl party every year plus the dances . he was a bright gentle man who traveled the world spreading cheer
Bernie was a forward-looking individual who was always looking forward to his next trip or the singles event that he would be hosting or attending. He had many ideas and cared for the well-being of single people. He really enjoyed dancing, and was leading an effort to resume a monthly dance at the Elks Lodge in Fairfax once the pandemic lifted, for which I am grateful. I had the privilege of rooming with Bernie in Miami, Florida for the two nights prior to launching on a singles cruise one January a few years ago. Except for his travels, Bernie tended not to talk much about his personal life, but during our time rooming together, we had good chats about his life. We will miss Bernie, but we will remember his kindness and dedication to provide a set of enjoyable social events to the single people of the metro DC area. Paul Wright Rockville, MD

I enjoyed his company on a trip to Cuba a few years ago. He had a sharp mind and good sense of humor.
I’ve sailed many times with Bernie and owe much to his leadership in the SCWDC and ASA sailing. He was our Captain for giving sailing classes and one of the notable leaders of the club. Sincere condolences to his family and he will be very much missed by all of us in the club. Sunrise… sunset in Belize… sail on Bernie to shores unknown… – David Hastie
Your dad did so much for SCWDC and was always so friendly with everyone. He will be missed. Bill and Sylvia Harris
Bernie will be missed by many. My husband, Marsh Golding who pre-deceased Bernie by six weeks, introduced me to him years ago. Bernie was kind, thoughtful and organized. He was instrumental in putting together many activities through the Ski Club Washington DC and getting others to give their time and commitment through his example that the social activities just flourished under his direction. Many a party, picnic, ski trip or sail owed its success to his understated leadership. We always looked forward to your Super Bowl Party Thank you Bernie for being such a good friend. We will all miss you.
Appreciate the opportunity to plant a tree in Bernie’s honor. Such a good man, he will be looking down from heaven to watch it grow.
Hello to the Joiner family, I,m so sorry for your loss. I knew Bernie from the ski club of Washington. He was the chair of the cultural committee and I organized dinners at nearby restaurants. I,LL remember him fondly and hope that your grief is short. Julie Carr
I’ve known Bernie for several years from various events and always found him a pleasure to be around. He made everyone feel welcome. This last year I worked with Bernie on some event planning and was amazed at his wonderful organizational skills and his ability to always know the best way to handle things – efficient and motivational too. Will miss you Bernie!
