Born in: Redmond, Washington
Resided in: Vienna, Virginia

Bernice Elaine Curtis passed peacefully in her sleep on the evening of October 30th, 2025, in the Sylvestery, at Vinson Hall in Mclean, VA. She was approximately one week shy of her 97th birthday. Bernice is preceded in death by her mother and father, sister Glorine, brother Elldee, son Michael and Husband Cdr. T.E. Curtis, USN Ret.

Bernice was Born on November 9th, 1928, in Redmond, Washington to Frank and Ellen Sedy. Bernice spent early years of her life in the Redmond/Seattle area where she completed High School and went to work as a civilian employee of the United States Navy in Seattle. It was there that Bernice met the love of her life, Lt. Theodore Edward Curtis, USN. Ted and Bernie were married on May 22, 1948. During Ted’s 28-year career they lived in many places (Seattle, Southern California, Northbrook, Il, Lisbon, Portugal, Vienna, VA, etc.) Bernie was the consummate Navy wife, Mother, and Housekeeper. It was during this time Bernie (and Ted, when home) raised three boys – Michael, Gary, and Scott. Bernie and Ted settled permanently in Vienna in 1966 to finish raising their family and extended family (9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren). Ted retired from the USN in 1970, completed his degree, and became a schoolteacher. Bernie went to work at Woodward and Lothrop Dept. Store and became an accomplished Furrier. Bernie retired from her successful retail career in the mid 1990’s and they settled into being permanent Grandparents and Great Grandparents. Ted passed in 2012, and Bernie suffered a significant stroke in 2020, which she recovered strongly from. She had been living in different facilities at Vinson Hall since then.
Ted was the Commander, but Bernie was “The Admiral”.

God bless, God’s grace, Godspeed

  1. I work with Scott and have long appreciated the thoughtful way he carries himself and contributes to those around him. It’s clear that these qualities reflect the strength and grace of his mother, Bernice. My heartfelt condolences and prayers to the Curtis family during this time of loss.
