Betti Jean Phillips

Betti Jean (Ulbricht) Lynn Phillips passed away peacefully on May 21, 2017 at her home in Vienna, Virginia. Betti is survived by her sons' Wayne D. Lynn (Kate) of Vienna, VA, Gari L. Lynn, Pulaski, TN, Rick Lynn (Deowatha), Stone Mt., GA, foster son Bobby Hodges (Debbie) Iron City, TN, and daughters' Debby J. (Lynn) Evans (Paul Nunnenkamp), Falls Church, VA, Jodi Lynn (Phillips) Nordstrom (Jermaine Whitby) Vienna, VA, step-daughters Cindie (Phillips) Cross (Jimmy), Loretto, TN, Stephanie (Phillips) Ragan (Mark), Carmel, IN and daughter-in-law Sharon K. Lynn, Herndon, VA. Betti also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren Kristina (Lynn) Huberman (Bernie), David J. Lynn (Melody), Rob McNeese (Sherry), Erin (McNeese) Nichols, Amy Lyn Evans, Julianna (Evans) Arnold, Carly (Evans) Miller (Robert), Melissa (Nunnenkamp) Maher (T.J.), Tamara (Lynn) Paulk, Melissa Lynn, Shana (Lynn) Brown (Christian), and Jordan (Nordstom) Epperson (Spencer). She deeply cherished her great-grandchildren Kayden Huberman, Brendan Lynn, Troy Lynn, Charlee-Kate Nichols, Addie Nichols, Camden McNeese, Mary Avery McNeese, Cory Miller, Tiffany Paulk, Camille Paulk, Miya Hamm, Macy Brown and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Betti was born in South Bend, Indiana to John Franklin Ulbricht and Winnifred Lois (Hauger) Ulbricht. Betti was preceded in death by her parents, brother John Franklin Ulbricht, II, and her sisters Winifred "Lois" (Ulbricht) Davis, and Marilyn E. (Ulbricht) Radican.
Betti was the Matriarch of her large loving family and always stood firm in her faith and beliefs. Betti graduated from high school early to work in the Studebaker plant to help the war effort of WWII. It was there she met and married Wayne D. Lynn in 1944. Betti was a devoted Mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who put everyone else before herself. Betti drove a truck to deliver the U.S. Mail to towns in northern Indiana in the 1950s and 1960s. Betti was also a talented singer and performer and appeared in many theatrical productions. In 1965 Betti married Robert M. Phillips and moved to Iron City, TN in 1967. Betti was a lifelong learner and student of the Bible, nutrition, and finally earned her BS degree in Music Education at the age of 48. Betti was a beloved elementary school Music Teacher who traveled to nine different schools in Lawrence County, TN. After moving to Vienna, VA in 1980 Betti continued her love of music and children by writing children's songs and was a teacher's assistant in special education at Vienna Elementary School, and taught music at the Antioch School in Vienna, VA and PALS Early Learning Center in Reston, VA. Miss Betti would start every class with "Who needs a hug today?"
Betti's family would like to thank the staff at John's Hopkins Hospital Bayview Center and Capital Caring Hospice for their wonderful care and compassion.
A celebration of Betti's life will be held at the Vienna Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, May 30 with a public viewing at 12:00 PM, funeral service at 1:00 PM, and burial at 2:00 PM at the Flint Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Capital Caring Hospice.
