Bruno Morreale Vasta passed away on October 3, 2024, at the age of 91. Born on April 1, 1933, he grew up in Washington DC attending Woodrow Wilson HS, Georgetown University and GW University for his BS & Masters in biochemistry. He was married for 64 years to Dorothy Ann Delaney Vasta, who preceded him in death. Bruno was a devoted father to his four children, Karen Flood (Paul), Vicki Healy (Tom), Charlotte Duchesne (Bill) and Rob Vasta (Laura). He was beloved ‘Papa’ to his 11 grandchildren, Kevin Healy (Kristen), Carlee Duchesne Wachna (Dan), Claire Healy (Kevin Barr), Nicko Duchesne (Lindsey), Lauren Flood Moore (Zach), Brenna Healy (Jeff Jung), Rob Vasta, Amanda Flood, Rachel Vasta, Daniel Flood, Bridget Vasta and his 4 great granddaughters.
Bruno had a long career at the National Institutes of Health and briefly with the Environmental Protection Agency. He was appointed a charter member of the Senior Executive Service by President Carter. He was awarded the NIH Merit Award and the NIH Director’s Award for his vision, creativity and leadership developing TOXNET, a revolutionary online system for disseminating toxicology information to the biomedical community.
Upon retiring, Bruno and Dorothy moved full time from Vienna, VA to Vasta View on the water in Maryland. There he founded “Dotty Vee Charters” and became known as “Captain Bruno”. He joined the Solomons and Maryland Charter Captains Association as well as the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association where he served as President for two years. He was appointed to serve as a Commissioner to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission advocating for cleaning the Bay and promoting sustainable fishing. Bruno lived his dream and was honored with the Maryland Sports Fishery Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
