Charles Edward “Chuck” Donaldson, age 92, of Vienna, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
Beloved husband of the late Frances Jewell Donaldson, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. Devoted father of Elaine Greenwell, Deborah Gilsan (Dan), Terry Donaldson (Kathleen), and Jody Donaldson (Sheila). He was a proud and deeply loved Papa to his grandchildren and great grandchildren, who meant everything to him.
Chuck proudly served his country in the United States Navy before beginning a distinguished 30 year career with the Arlington County Police Department. Over the course of his service, he worked in patrol, as a motorman, and later as a detective, earning the respect of his colleagues and the community he served.
After retiring from law enforcement, Chuck followed his passion for the water as captain of his fishing boat, Bounty, on the Chesapeake Bay. It was something he truly loved and took great pride in.
He was also a dedicated coach in Vienna youth sports, spending many years mentoring young athletes in football, baseball, and basketball. He was not just a coach, but a steady presence and role model whose impact extended far beyond the field.
Chuck was a devoted husband, father, Papa, and friend. He carried a tough, no nonsense exterior, but those closest to him knew that beneath it was a big heart. As Dad and Papa, he had a special way of making his children and grandchildren feel safe, supported, and proud. He was the ultimate protector of his family. Some of his greatest moments in life were simply being surrounded by them.
He lived a life defined by service, discipline, and quiet strength. He showed up for his country, his community, and most importantly, his family. That is how he will be remembered.

Chuck and I were partners in the Commercial Burglary squad from 1974 until 1977. He was a great mentor and an experienced Detective when I was first assigned to work with him. Chuck was considerably older than I was at the time and I benefited greatly from his experience. He was a great cop!!
My heart goes out to you and your family as you mourn the loss of your beloved father. Please know that I’m holding you and your family close in my thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
With sympathy,
San
Dear Donaldson family, we are so grateful for the privilege of knowing Chuck the last year or so of his life. He brought a lot of light not only to us, but to our neighborhood as well. Thank you for sharing your dad and Papa with us. You are in our prayers! Much love, Adam and Alia Cardwell and kids
Mr. Donaldson was a truly wonderful and gentle man, with a smile that could light up any room. As a child, I was always a little intimidated by his quiet presence, but as an adult, I came to see the truth, he was a big teddy bear at heart.
I will always remember him riding his yellow and white lawn mower, leaning back to ease the pressure on his hip. It’s such a simple image, but one that captures him so perfectly. He was a true treasure and will be deeply missed.
I’m so sorry for your loss. He loved his family dearly, and that love will always be part of his legacy.
I send you my deepest condolences and pray that the comfort and peace that come from Almighty God may be with the entire family during this time of saying to Mr. “Chuck” “until we meet again.”
I am so sorry for your tremendous loss. I’m praying and sending love & lots of hugs to you and your family, as you work your way thru this very devastating time.
Love, Renée
