Charles John Nackos

Charles John Nackos, 97, of Vienna, VA, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2020. Born April 14th, 1923 in Wilson, NC, Charlie was the devoted son of the late John and Eva Nackos, and caring brother to his beloved late sister Mary Yionoulis. Charlie will be dearly remembered and missed by niece Evan Yionoulis and nephew Mike Yionoulis, and their families, as well as close friends Bonnie Pate, Wade Pate, Katie Wyatt and their families. Charlie graduated from NC State College of Engineering with a BS in Civil Engineering. Following college, he faithfully served his country in the Army during World War II. After the war, Charlie owned, operated, and promoted Goldsboro Speedway in Goldsboro, NC. Applying his college gleaned skills, Charlie then worked as a civil engineer at University of Maryland, and as a project engineer at Savannah River Plant, as well as with the US Army Corps of Engineers, before settling in northern Virginia. Charlie was a long-time resident of Vienna, who also maintained a vacation home for years at Nags Head, NC. He was former owner of Atkinson Tile Company, and also noted as a one-time candidate for mayor of Vienna. In addition, Charlie served as a past president of Tile Contractors Association of Metropolitan Washington, and prior manager of Vienna Farmers Market. Likewise, he had been a dedicated member of Vienna Moose Lodge, Optimist Club of Vienna, and Vienna Regional Chamber of Commerce. Charlie most proudly served as past Commander of the American Legion Post 180 in Vienna. For many years, up until his late eighties, Charlie was a daily regular at his favorite haunts, the American Legion, Vienna Inn, and Bazin’s on Church. And he was perhaps Budweiser’s most committed consumer, who loved to dance (with a great story about having danced with Ava Gardner), and was an avid Washington Redskins and Boston Red Sox fan. Charlie particularly enjoyed his friendship with his late business partner H.B. Atkinson, best-friend the late Jimmy Yeonas, fellow North Carolinian and renowned quarterback Sonny Jurgensen, as well as his late pals Frank Harden and Jackson Weaver. He was frequently the topic of humorous discussion on the popular Harden and Weaver radio show. It can truly be said Charlie lived life to its fullest and he will always be cherished by those that knew him. Share a memory at moneyandking.com

  2. I have great memories of Charlie growing up. His Mayoral campaign slogan was “Nakos Next”. He was a dear friend of our family – I can’t drive down West St without thinking of him. He was with us in 1965 in Greece and I still have the photos! May His memory be eternal. Dean Yeonas

    • My family grew up across the street from the Nackos family on Vance St. in Wilson. It was a great neighborhood. I was too young to know Charles well , but his mom and dad were great to me. Lots of good memories. God Bless! Morgan Dickerman
