Chester E. Carpenter, Jr.

LTC Chester E. Carpenter US Army (Ret.) died January 25, 2010 at the Virginian in Fairfax, Virginia. Beloved father/father-in-law of Eric Carpenter of Reston, Virginia, Sheila Carpenter & William McCarthy of Vienna, Virginia, David & Janet Carpenter of University Park, Maryland, & Elise & Steve Geyer of Herndon, Virginia; & his sister Lois Walrath of Canastota, New York. Preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Betty B. Carpenter. Proud grandfather of Ben, Kari, Tori & Jake Geyer, Dan & Amy Carpenter & Diana McCarthy. A 21-year Army veteran, he served in World War II, Korea & the Berlin Wall Crisis, earning the Bronze Star in Korea. He served as an educational advisor for counterintelligence to the Army Intelligence School in Ft. Holabird, Maryland for several years after his retirement. After the school moved to Arizona, he worked for the state of Maryland teaching management courses. Born in Chittenango Falls, New York, he grew up poor during the depression but his mother stressed the importance of education. World War II interrupted his education at Syracuse University. He finished his degree at Sofia University during a tour in Japan & later earned a Master's Degree at Loyola College in Baltimore. He waw fluent in Japanese & German. At age 63, he decided that full-time work interfered with his golf game too much. He took accounting courses at Catonsville Community College, passed the CPA exam & started a part-time tax & bookkeeping practice which he finally gave up at age 75.
