Lt. Col. Clifford Wollard, USA, Ret., 88, of Fairfax, Virginia, passed away on September 15, 2024 following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Uta, in 2021. Cliff grew up in the Germantown and Roxborough neighborhoods of Philadelphia and graduated from Germantown Academy and Lafayette College. He later earned a master’s degree from the University of Missouri. Following his graduation from Lafayette, Cliff joined the US Army in 1959 and served two tours in Vietnam earning several medals and service ribbons before retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Cliff enjoyed many a pipe and cigar and, following his retirement from the military, became a tobacconist holding court and selling tobacco, pipes and cigars to the citizens of Loudoun County and beyond at his store in Leesburg, Virginia. Many customers could be found sitting in the not so comfortable chairs at his store for hours, smoking cigars and talking about the events of the day. He will be fondly remembered for his service to his country, his ability to tell a tale, and his love of animals, particularly, Salty, the neighborhood cat who brought great joy to him in his last year.
Cliff is survived by his adoring children, Kim Johnson and husband, Jim, and Pam Carmody and husband, Bill, along with his grandchildren, Ella and Cliff Johnson and Claire and Will Carmody.
A graveside service at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.
