Daniel Lewis Benson, a resident of Vienna, VA, died unexpectedly on November 13, 2018. He was 77 years old.

Dan is survived by his wife Sabra D. (Scotty) Benson, and son James R. Benson. He is predeceased by his son Douglas S. Benson, his mother Ethel H. Benson, his father John R. Benson, and his brother David C. Benson.

Dan was born in Newark, NJ, and attended Glen Ridge High School in Glen Ridge, NJ. He received a B.S. from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA and an M.B.A. from the University of Hartford in Hartford, CT. He was a member of Psi Upsilon Fraternity.

Dan and Scotty were married in 1967, and started a family in 1969 in West Hartford, CT. Dan worked in banking and civic affairs in Hartford, CT before relocating the family to Vienna, VA in 1979. Dan’s professional career in the greater Washington, DC area included marketing, governmental affairs and retail positions. He was most recently employed as a cashier at Giant Foods in Oakton, VA.

Dan was first and foremost a loving husband, caring father, and loyal friend. He strongly believed in bettering his community, and was heavily involved in civic affairs and projects, including Wolf Trails Park, the NoVi Trail system and the pedestrian bridge crossing the Dulles Toll Road near Wolf Trap Farm Park.

Dan attended Lewinsville Presbyterian Church in McLean, VA and maintained a strong foundation of faith.

Dan enjoyed: singing and classical music, politics, genealogy, avidly reading history, grilling delicious foods, the Washington Redskins, Winston Churchill and driving in his 1989 Cadillac.

A memorial service is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, 1724 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, VA 22101. The family requests that a donation be made to the following organizations in lieu of flowers:

Guestbook

  1. Sending love and prayers for inner strength to Scotty, my Oxford classmate and bridesmaid, and to Jimmy. ❤️ Cindy and Michael

  2. Having served for 7 years as a volunteer in Sunrise Hunter Mill I’ve been drawn almost daily to Giant food where I became acquainted with dear Dan. I knew of his church, like me a Presbyterian, and his love for the Vienna Choral Society. I am so very sorry for your suffering in this very sad time and pray you know God’s comfort and that the peace of Christ abides.

  3. Scotty, Dan was a valued member of VCS- both as a singer and as a wonderful fund-raiser for Friends of VCS. His voice and he will be missed. Our sympathies to you from all of VCS.
    Catherine Michela

  4. Our family will miss Dan’s camaraderie, quick wit, love for the Redskins, Republican passion and wise counsel. Rest in peach Dan, we will never forget you. Love, Bill Jr, Linda, William III and Ryan

  5. Scoots:
Know that Newb and I are with you in love and spirit, and wish we could physically be there as well. We always fondly remember your wedding. I remember visiting West Hartford many times and my Mother throwing your hamster!!! Our youth! Love to you and Jim.
    Nancy

  6. Dear Scotty,
You have been constantly on my mind and I’m reaching out to you as you gather at church tomorrow for the final goodbye. I pray you feel God’s blessing. I pray He gives you strength. I pray you feel His love, and the love from all of us who yearn to hold you and console you. Know we are forever friends.

    Debbie Meinke

  7. Stalwart. That would be the word if I were to pick one to describe Dan Benson. I worked alongside Dan for almost two decades in order to make our community of northern Vienna safer and more fun. Only Dan would be the person to show up at midnight with a bottle of wine to join my son and I for a toast as we watched a pedestrian bridge he’d worked so hard to obtain be set firmly in place over the Dulles Toll Road. Now residents and visitors can safely and securely walk and bike to Wolf Trap, our only national park devoted to the performing arts. This is only one of many projects to which Dan has contributed his considerable time and talent over the years. The community and I are in Dan’s debt.
