Daniel “Danny” Martin Bessette, born on October 20, 1984, in Vienna, Virginia, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and cherished memories.

Beloved Family

Danny was a devoted husband to Jacqueline L. Bessette and a proud father to his five-year-old daughter, Shannon L. Bessette, who was the light of his life. He is survived by his loving parents, John F. and Margaret (Pat) Bessette, and his brother, Peter J. Bessette. Danny also leaves behind a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins who will forever remember his warmth, kindness, quick wit, and sense of humor.

“Danny was my best friend and the love of my life. His ability to have faith that all would be well and to live in hope created our beautiful life.” – Jacqueline L. Bessette

Education and Career

Danny graduated from Bishop O’Connell High School and continued his studies at George Mason University and Salve Regina University, ultimately earning a Bachelor of Arts in Justice from American University School of Public Affairs. His most recent position before stepping back due to health challenges was with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department IT Division, where he applied his skills with dedication and professionalism.

Passions and Advocacy

Danny fought a courageous battle against cystic fibrosis—not only for himself but for all children and young adults living with the disease. His life was defined by his passion for sports and his commitment to helping others. A lifelong hockey enthusiast, Danny was a proud member of the Bishop O’Connell High School hockey team throughout his high school years and continued to share his love for the game by assisting in coaching for many years after graduation. He was a mentor whose presence left a lasting impact on countless young athletes. Danny’s love for sports extended beyond hockey; he found joy in playing and was a faithful fan, cheering on his

favorite teams and especially those of his daughter, Shannon, who inherited his enthusiasm and love for athletics.

Beyond the rink and early in his life, Danny became a tireless advocate in the fight against cystic fibrosis, as a poster child in National campaigns, on the cover of Science Magazine when the Cystic Fibrosis gene was discovered, and he was featured in many publications as a measuring tool on the increased life expectancy that resulted from medical advancements. He dedicated his time to speaking engagements and public events to raise awareness and support for the cause. His mission was always to champion others, never seeking attention for himself.

A Personal Anecdote

One of Danny’s favorite moments as a coach came during a high school playoff game when his team was down by two goals in the final period. Instead of focusing on the scoreboard, Danny gathered the players and said, “Play for each other, not for the numbers.” The team rallied, tied the game, and won in overtime. Years later, former players still recall that speech as a lesson in perseverance and teamwork—a reflection of Danny’s character both on and off the ice.

  2. Jackie, I am sending you, Shannon, and your entire family my deepest love and most sincere condolences. While I didn’t have the privilege of knowing Daniel, I know what a bright and beautiful spirit you are, Jackie—it is easy to see that Daniel must have been an incredible man to share in that light with you.

My heart is with you as you navigate this journey of grief. May you find comfort in knowing that his love hasn’t left you; it has simply changed form. May he rest in eternal peace and continue to watch over you, walking beside you and Shannon in every step you take.

Praying that the peace which passes all understanding guards your hearts today and in the days to come.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. While weeping may stay for the night, know that His peace remains, and His light will guide you through the morning.” — Derived from Psalm 34:18, Psalm 147:3, and Psalm 30:5

  3. My heart aches for the family, I’m so incredibly sorry for your loss .

  6. Jackie and Pat,
Know that memories will live forever. Just as they can trigger a tear, in the days, months and years to come, they will bring a smile, a laugh, and in loved ones, the inexplicable feeling of a warm embrace.
For me, be it fate or luck, Danny kept gracing me with real life reminders of how to live a full life despite challenges. From a clinic visit with Danny and Pat on the morning of his Science Magazine cover photo shoot, to a CF Superdance kickoff assembly at DJO when he followed my talk to announced to his classmates for the 1st time that he had the disease, to a CF Gala in Richmond where you Jackie as the guest speaker announced that you and Danny were expecting, to my presence at a national clinical guidance committee meeting at the CF Foundation HQ on Dec 8th where the CEO shared Danny’s passing to the group. Each of those touch points, and others, reminded me that diseases don’t define a person. That definition is for the person to make. Danny made a great one. You two helped him. You three made a difference. Time has expired on his game scoreboard. He won because Danny “play[ed] for each other, not for the numbers.”

    • Dear Joel,
You words touch us so close to our hearts. I remember the day that Danny autographed the cover of Science Magazine for you in crayon and you spoke at O’Connell ‘s Super Dance. We have made so many special friends and had so many amazing experiences because of Danny. He fought such a courageous
battle in such an unassuming manner.
      Thank you!
      Pat
