Daphne Dion Climenson, 94, of Reston, VA, passed away on May 3, 2024 in McLean, VA. Daphne is survived by her son Bob Bretz and his wife, Kathy, and grandson, Kevin Bretz.

Born in Long Beach, CA to Stanley King and Delphine De Izcue, she grew up in California and Cuba. She joined the Air Force and met her late husband Walter Bretz, and raised Bob while earning her Bachelor’s degree at Sacramento State. She got her Master’s degree from George Washington University, worked as a teacher for Fairfax County Public Schools, and did administrative work and educational program development for the Marine Corps, the Department of Agriculture, and the Office of Personnel Management.

Dion enjoyed extensive travel during her lifetime – mostly in Europe, East Asia, North Africa, and Latin America. She was a student of world history, culture, and the arts. A talented artist and art aficionado herself, she met her late husband Doug Climenson at an art gallery in DC. She loved sketching, painting in watercolors and acrylics, and had her work displayed and sold in several DC and Chesapeake area art shows. She was also an excellent and fearless cook, and hosted wonderful dinner parties for her many cherished friends.

Many thanks to all who made her last days comfortable. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to World Central Kitchen, ASPCA, or Alzheimer’s Association. Services are private.
