David V. Pecora

October 2, 1916 ~ July 25, 2014
David V. Pecora, M.D.
(Age 97)
of McLean, VA, died at his home on Friday, July 25, 2014. Husband of 70 years to Dorothy Beavers Pecora; father of Ann Diamond and Michele Pecora; loving grandfather and great-grandfather. David is also survived by sisters Mena Beardsley and Louise Williams and was predeceased by his brother Peter Pecora and sister Tullia Ricci. He was a member of the American College of Thoracic Surgery. Among his achievements in surgical procedures was the development of transtracheal aspiration. He served in WWII in the surgical service from 1943 to 1945. He graduated from Columbia University in 1937 and from Yale School of Medicine in 1941. Memorial Services will be held at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 W. Maple Ave., Vienna, VA on Wednesday, July 30 at 2:00 P.M.
Our friend Suhail Kahn aptly introduced my parents at an event honoring their service with the following:
David V. Pecora was born of Italian immigrant parents in Yonkers, NY on October 2, 1916. He was educated at Columbia, Yale and Western Reserve University. After military service, he became a thoracic surgeon engaged in research, teaching and patient care. He is a member of numerous professional societies, the author of over 130 articles, the book "Between the Raindrops", a modern odyssey and is currently writing a second book.
Dorothy Pecora hailed from German and Scotch settlers who farmed central Ohio since the early 19th century. Born on March 22, 1922 she attended Mt. Carmel School of Nursing after graduating high school. She joined the army as a Second Lieutenant and began serving stateside at a veterans hospital in Indiana in 1943. As a night supervisor, she was introduced to David Pecora, a First Lieutenant and young surgeon.
On Christmas Eve 1944, on her way to Northern Ireland, she was reintroduced to David. They began seeing each other after they landed and were engaged by April. Soon afterwards, David was stationed in a marshalling area in Southern England. In Order to marry they had to have permission from General Eisenhower; Dorothy's mother mailed her a wedding dress, veil and flowers which she carried with her as she was shipped on a small craft to England and then traveled by train to Southern England. David and Dorothy were married in July 21, 1944 in a Catholic church, too late to be legally recorded, so the next morning they were married again in uniform. Seperated later that same day, they were not to be reunited for over a year.
While both were in the Battle of the Bulge, they wrote nearly every day, unable to write specifics. Delivery was unreliable and sometimes they received a month's worth of mail a one time.
They celebrated their 70th Anniversary with flowers, a giant sunflower balloon and a small ice cream cake. David didn't feel hungary and wanted to postpone the luncheon celebration that we had planned.
