Delilah Virginia Custer, 94, of Chesterbrook Residences in Falls Church, VA passed away on April 11, 2023 after 6 weeks in hospice care.

Delilah (Dee) was born on December 20, 1928 to Abram W Reese and Helen (Keen) Reese in Lancaster, PA. After graduating from Lancaster High School in 1946, Dee went to Stephens College in Missouri and graduated from Chatham University (formerly Pennsylvania College for Women) in Pittsburgh, PA in 1950 with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Sociology.

In 1948, Dee met H Louis (Hank) Custer and they were married in 1950. Dee is survived by two daughters, Kaye Lynn Weiss of Harrisburg, PA and Jody Ann Ransom of McLean, VA. Dee quickly became friends with most people she met. Dee’s warm and caring personality endeared her to many. Dee was the kind of Proverbs 31 woman who would go out of her way to help meet another person’s needs often taking food or a meal to someone’s home. Dee loved to cook and try new recipes. Dee was very involved in her church, Lewinsville Presbyterian where she was a member for 57 years. Dee served as a deacon, Stephen Minister, and was involved in the Women’s Circle and the Adult Club. She was also active in the Stephens College Alumni Association. Dee loved children and was a volunteer at the Falls Church McLean Children’s Center for many years. She also volunteered at the Junior League Thrift Stores.

Delilah was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, H Louis Custer, her sister, Shirley K Simons, and her great granddaughter, Tasha Bennett. Dee is survived by her daughters, Kaye Lynn Weiss and husband Larry, and Jody Ann Ransom and husband Robert, 5 grandchildren—Christine Burkett, Crecia McCarthy and husband Timothy, Allison Ford and husband Jonathan, Lauren Ransom, and Michael Ransom and wife Sydney, 6 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, loving nieces and nephews, and many dear and caring friends.

There will be a visitation on Thursday, April 20, 2023 from 6-8 pm at the Money & King Funeral Home in Vienna, VA. A service to celebrate Dee’s life will be held on Friday, April 21, 2023 at 2 pm at Lewinsville Presbyterian Church in McLean, VA. A visitation will begin one hour prior to the start of the memorial service. Dee’s remains will be laid to rest in the Lewinsville Presbyterian Church cemetery beside her loving husband, Hank.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Lewinsvillle Presbyterian Church Foundation or Chesterbrook Residences.

  1. That precious first grandchild was so loved by all the Keens. Mom would tell us about how they couldn’t wait for her to arrive for a visit to Christiana and how Mom loved to show her off to everyone in town. Mom would have been 13 when Dee was born. She always held a special place in the hearts of her Aunt Evie and Aunt Ruth. And now they have been reunited. What Joy! Her cousins all loved her too.
She was one in a million.

    • Thank you for this dear message, Audrey. It warmed my heart and also brought a tear to my eye. As you said, what joy there is in heaven at that blessed reunion with Dad, her mother and father, Shirley, her dear aunties, sweet cousins and so many other loved ones!

  2. Thank you’ Delilah, for all the wonderful recipes you clipped through the years. Years ago your daughter Kaye shared many with me. During covid I finally had time to organize your recipes into binders, I feel honored and have enjoyed cooking from your choices of recipes!!! You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Fondly, Joyce and Barry Levin

    • Thanks, Joyce. So glad to hear you are still enjoying some of Mom’s recipes. You and my Mom are kindred spirits in your love of cooking and trying new things. Kaye
