That unique ability coupled with his amazing sense of humor made him a welcome part of all of our “get togethers”. Last summer he joined my family (Fructuoso/Garland/Wood Clan) at the beach – along with Susan, Paul, Bec and Gene – and helped support us through a tough summer. He brought boundless joy with him. And we needed it. I count myself lucky to have known him. Love, Judi Garland

  23. God bless you, Diego. Our heartfelt prayers and thoughts and sympathies to his family at this very difficult and sad time. We hope that when you do read all these postings here and on facebook that it will comfort you to know just how many people loved him. Diego touched many lives and made people laugh and shared abundant joy and happiness with people on a daily basis over the span of his entire life….wow that is a gift and a blessing to all of us that was lucky enough to know him and call him friend…We look forward to meeting you again someday…Thank you for the friendship and the laughter and the memories..

  24. I met Diego only once, on a Meetup hike at Sky Meadows State Park last year. Even after one brief meeting, his warm personality and beaming smile are easy to remember. So very sorry for your loss.

  25. My deepest sympathies to the Alvarez Family during this very difficult time. Diego was a lively, kind, and inspirational person who has touched my family and I’s life during one of our most difficult times. He gave us peace and laughter in our darkest of days. I am honored to have known such a wonderful person. Diego, may you rest peacefully and watch over your family and friends. We will all miss you dearly.

  26. I worked with Diego for 10 years. We shared a love of classic rock and stupid jokes. Talking to him always made me smile. His sense of humor was infectious. My deepest condolences to the Alvarez family and all of Diego’s many friends. The Eskimo’s say that stars are just our loved ones looking down on us from Heaven. I will miss him terribly. God bless.

  27. Diego was a special man. He was positive and a joy to know. Diego had a deep like for Civil War history, and so he hiked with me over mountains, across streams, and through valleys, and we explored where battles of long ago took place that shaped our country. He had a thirst for knowledge that was almost childlike, and he always got the most out of my hikes and historical narratives. Diego would bring a large tray of homemade delicacies for me and the other hikers. Once, when we played on opposite teams in a competitive sport, he would root not only for his own team but also for our team. He wanted everyone to win and to be happy. Now, he is not totally gone but simply in another location spreading his good cheer. I am sure that he is in a special place and as he entered those heavenly gates he had a large tray of cookies under his arm and he happily offered them to all the angels. Having known Diego was a gift I will always treasure.

  28. Diego, the loss we are feeling without you is a lot to bare. To say the least you were truly unique in the best of ways and I know that everyone that knows you will know what I am talking about. Your experiences, love of life, people and taking advantage of the opportunities to live life to the fullest was something that I always personally admired and hoped to emulate in some capacity. You had the ability to lift us up no matter the circumstances. Coming into the office and not seeing your bright face and positive energy is something Darryl, Ron and I will greatly miss. You were a brother to us and we loved you very much! Last night, Ali was reading the big brother book you bought him to Fatima almost two years ago. They read it all the time. He reminded me that you were the one that gave it to him as a gift. We have lost our physical access to you but will never forget and will carry on your memory to the best of our ability.

  29. extended from previous posting. I cannot express how much I want to personally thank you for your sincere dedication and willingness to help and impact others in such a positive manner. I have no doubt your energy and light will live on well past this short life. My deepest condolences to the Alvarez family and all of Diego’s friends for this great loss. Diego made a great impact through his seemingly endless positive demeanor.

  30. 28 years have passed since I befriended you. I now realize that too many of those years were spent out of touch. That said, I will not dwell on what could have been, but rather what was…and is: uplifting, cheerful, silly, smiling, memorable. These are the unforgetable qualities that defined you in flesh and spirit. Today, your memory saddens me; tomorrow, it will be uplifting. Thank you for that gift.

  31. Like so many others have noted, the first thing I noticed about Diego when I met him was his beaming smile. I will remember his ability to make people laugh, how he genuinely cared about people, and how he was able to bring people together. May the light of Christ’s love and peace rest upon all who have known him, and may he continue to shine in ever new ways, according to the love and grace of our God. I’ll miss you, Buddy.

  40. Diego will be missed by many … He always had a smile on his face. It was a pleasure to have met him. May god bless his family.

  41. I was shocked and saddened to hear about Diego. Although I just retired from PWCS, I enjoyed many years of working with Diego and will cherish that time. My deepest sympathy to the Alvarez family and may we all remember the life and accomplishments of Diego.

  42. I was not a close friend with Diego but know him from High School as a fun guy that could get along with anyone. We will miss his warm smile and open heart.

  43. Diego and I were very close friends in high school, and I was fortunate to continue our relationship beyond that as we both attended GMU. As often happens, our lifes paths took us in different directions soon after college, but with Diego it was always easy to reunite. It was one of those magical relationships that made it easy to pick right up where we left off. I had not seen Diego in the last year and am saddened to have allowed that to happen. Right now life is teaching me one of those life is short lessons and reminds me of how precious our time is together on this earth. Diego, you are truly larger than life and THANK YOU for sharing so much with me. I will miss you. To Diegos family; Im so sorry for your loss. Diego was a special soul, and I know his love for his family was an important factor in his life. My thoughts and prayers are with you through this difficult time.

  44. It was a privilege to have known Diego over the last few years. He brought joy with his megawatt smile, gave assistance for those in need, and welcomed everyone by making them feel special. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

  45. I have worked with Diego for the last 3 years. He has been a colleague, trainer, mentor and friend. What impressed me about him as much as anything is his demeanor when things were not going well. He was always there to lend a hand if you needed it, no matter how late at night or how long it took to get the job done. He would not allow you to go through adversity alone. He had a way of making you feel better about something, even when you felt your worst. He selflessly, did it without ever wanting anything in return no matter how much you offered to return the favor. Diego also displayed a tremendous zest for life, trying to live it to the fullest. I have tried to implement Diegos approach in my personal and professional life. I can honestly say I am a better worker, friend, husband, dad and person for having been blessed to know Diego. He will be missed but also remembered.

  46. Diego and I were co-workers and friends. Anytime I called him for help he was always willing to help no matter what he was working on at the time. I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with the Alvarez family through this difficult time.

  47. Our dear sweet loveable Diego…. My heart is SO SO sad! I will miss you terrible. I cherish the years we knew each other and I’m counting the days till we meet again. I know we will meet again…. Don’t worry about the three amegos at work, I’ve got their backs. Reset in peace my sweet friend. All my love, Linda Lu

  48. While I only met Diego once, he was someone you never forgot. He was funny, friendly and full of life. He was truly a bright light shining on Earth, that is now shining from Heaven. My thoughts, prayers and love to all of the Alvarez family. Especially to Hector, for he introduced me to Diego. Godspeed Diego.

  49. I am so shocked and saddened by Diego’s passing, I remember him as a sweet and caring guy, enjoyed fun people and lots of laughs. I cannot believe he is gone.

  50. We didn’t have the pleasure to meet Diego, but we know his parents and our players for them and the family. God will give you the strength you need. Para sus padres un abrazo y nuestras condolencias. Que Dios los bendiga.

  51. My sincere condolences to the Alvarez family…may God comfort you during this very difficult time. Diego was truly one of a kind. He always had a huge smile and a jolly laugh to share – always a supportive friend – a genuine happy and giving soul. We are all so very blessed to have known him, and we should all spread “glee and merriment” as often and as freely as he did – which was ALWAYS and unconditionally. Forever in our hearts Mr. D, forever in our hearts. <3

  52. My condolences go out to the Alvarez family! Such a young man. I didn’t have the pleasure of getting to know Diego with the Meetup group. My thoughts and prayers go out to all who did know and love him. So sad.
