DONALD H. MISNER

On Thursday, May 18, 2017, Donald Hogan Misner of McLean, VA passed peacefully, with family and friends by his side.

Don was born in St. Louis, MO on December 16, 1934 to Chester C. Misner and Lela Juanita Hogan. After his father joined the US Navy, they lived in Yakima, WA, San Diego, CA, Washington, DC and suburbs. While his father served in the service, Don attended various military schools graduating high school from the Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA. Years later, he served a term on the financial board of that Academy.

In 1957 Don earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree at the University of Virginia, after which he served in the US Army Corps. of Engineers on active duty for six months, then Army Reserves for seven years. His first architectural employment was with Saunders and Pearson. In that firm, he was chief designer for the original T. C. Williams High School in Alexandria and for the first quadrangle buildings at George Mason University.

He and two partners formed the firm of Kohler, Misner, Daniels, A.I.A specializing in commercial architecture throughout the Washington, DC metro area. Being a true entrepreneur, Don then formed Misner Development Co. focusing on office building and shopping center development throughout the region. Don served many years on the Board of Trustees for Federal Realty Investment Trust as well.

In August 1985, while vacationing in the Bahamas with friends, Don suffered a severe spinal cord injury, resulting in paraplegia. During his rehabilitation period at Jackson Memorial Hospital at the University of Miami and in numerous conversations with Dr. Barth Green, Nick Buonicotti and others, Don helped to create the premier investigative research program for spinal cord injury - The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Don is known as the hero who survived thirty-two very active years as a determined and productive paraplegic, an inspiration to all.

Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gloria Taylor Misner; his daughter, June Misner of Edwards, CO and McLean, VA; his son, Keith Misner of Annapolis, MD; his daughter-in-law, Gretchen Misner, and three grandsons, Maxfield, Blake and Gavin.

Visitation will be held Friday, June 16th from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM and again from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 West Maple Ave., Vienna, VA. There will be a Masonic Ceremony at 7:30 PM.

A funeral service to honor Don will be held on Saturday, June 17th at 10:00 AM at McLean Baptist Church, 1367 Chain Bridge Road, McLean, VA.
