Donald Mellom
August 22, 1935 ~ October 28, 2012
Donald Claire Mellom, age 77, of Smith Mountain Lake, VA and formerly of Fairfax, VA passed away at home on October 28, 2012 from multiple system atrophy. He was born on August 22, 1935 in Baltic, SD. He was preceeded in death by his parents Claire E. and Rose Mellom, his sister Darlene Shrewsberry and his wife Lois Mellom as well as his step granddaughter, Hollie Froemke. He is survived by his sons Raymond (Soheila) Mellom, David (Chirhiro)Mellom, Darren (Dee) Mellom and his step son Larry (Kathy) Froemke. His grandchildren Erin Mellom (Geran) Legue, Drew Mellom, Blake Mellom, Kylie Mellom, Issei Mellom and Step-grandsons, Paul and Robert Froemke.
Don grew up in Minnehaha County, DS. He graduated from Lyons High School and then went on to South Dakota State University. After graduation he started working for the USDA as a statistician, retiring in 1990. During his long career with the USDA he lived in Minnesota, Colorado, Wyoming and for over 35 years in Fairfax, VA. He was an active genealogist for his family and enjoyed sharing the family stories with all of his relatives. In his retirement he enjoyed bowling with the Swinging Seniors. He was a collector and had collections of stamps, baseball cards, matchbox cars and coins.
