Phyllis, Please know that Bill and I are keeping you and the family in prayer. May God’s peace surround you and your family at this difficult time. I did not get many opportunities to talk with RD, but the times I did were very memorable. It sounds like his impact here affected so many people from so many different walks of life. We may not be with you in the physical, but you are in our hearts. We will see you in North English. We Love you! Beth
My condolences to Phyllis and family. Robert’s contributions to the UNC School of Public Health and the Foundation Board will be missed.
My deepest sympathy to the family. May the God of all comfort give you peace at this difficult time. And His promise of being reunited with our loved ones on a paradise earth where “death will be no more” Rev 21:4

Phyllis, My sincere condolences to you, your two children and the grandchildren.I’m so glad I was able to spend an afternoon in your home last year with you, Robert, and other SPH grads. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to revisit with the two of you, our days together at SPH (1968-1970). You have so many wonderful memories from your 50+ years with Robert that will be with you to make your mourning more bearable. There will be tears and sad times, but there will be many more grins and even chuckles as you recount your years with Robert. I hope we meet again soon and can share some “Robert stories” Best personal regards, Jack Wilson
Dear Phyllis, I was deeply saddened to learn of Robert’s passing today. He was indeed a wonderful husband, father and friend. The lives he touched through his kindness are endless. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.
My heartfelt condolences to Phyllis and all of the Verhalen Family. THANK YOU Robert and Phyllis for your contribution to my education via the scholarship. It was a pleasure meeting you at UNC. It was very nice sharing the evening with you, getting much needed encouragement, and simply getting to know wonderful people like you two. You have touched many lives, and I am utterly grateful.
