Edward F. Duffy, Jr.

June 6, 1942 ~ December 7, 2010
Edward F. Duffy, Jr., 68, died on Tuesday, December 7, 2010, our beloved father, husband, brother and friend died of lung cancer in his home surrounded by his loving family. Ed was born in Washington, DC on June 6, 1942 and raised in Arlington, Va. Even as a young boy, Ed was known for bringing a smile to all who knew him. He graduated from Washington & Lee High School in 1961 and joyfully welcomed his three children, Cherie, Todd and Scott in 1961, 1964 and 1969 respectively. After a few other jobs, he found his professional calling with the US government in 1972 working for the National Park Service. Ed spent 37 years in various roles with the NPS, ranging from Superintendent at Great Falls National Park to his final one as Associate Regional Director, National Capital Area. In 1980, Ed married the love of his life Jan and happily welcomed her children, Cheryl and Eric, as well as Jan's parents into his life. His true passion though was coaching his childrens sports teams throughout the 70's and 80's. He is happily remembered by all he coached as positive, fun, a great supporter and a true winner. He always made people feel good about themselves and as such touched the lives of thousands. Ed was continuing this impact by teaching his nine grandchildren similar life lessons. Ed will be remembered for bringing out the best in people. His positive, can-do attitude and genuine compassion will be missed by all. We will remember Ed in a Celebration of Life party in February. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Capital Hospice, who provided us with loving care and support.

I was so sorry to hear of Ed’s passing. We were colleagues at NPS. I will remember him as a warm and friendly person who was always genuinely interested in others. He will be missed.
Dear Jan & family, We are so very sorry to hear about Ed. We last saw him at one of the Hall of Fame dinners at Madison High School and he was the same happy, smiling face person that we knew from softball for many many years. He was still so young! He will be greatly missed. Take care and we love you all. Gene & Horace
Dear Jan & Family, May the Lord bless you in this time of heartache and sorrow, but remember what an impact he had on those of us who were blessed to work with him and call him friend. I first met Ed as an Intake Ranger in 1973 and we remained good friends over all these years, through thick and thin. He made my life better!!!!
Ed was always positive when I spoke with him. He was another member of the NPS family that will be missed. Michael Moreno
Ed was always a great friend of VLL and a fun person to be with. We have a lot of good memories of our days at Yeonas Park. He will be missed by all.
Jan and family, our prayers are with you at this difficult time. What a beautiful influence Ed had on young people. Not only did he have a keen knowledge of the game of softball but was able to motivate and counsel his players in a positive manner. We are certain that the lessons Ed taught on the field prepared his girls for life. We are most grateful for the influence he had on our daughter Kristy. He will be greatly missed.
Jan & Family: Sorry to hear of Ed’s passing. He loved coaching girls softball and they loved him in return(whether they had an “innie” or an “outie” He was the best hitting coach I ever saw and will be missed. Mike Egan/coach/umpire
Dear Jan, I was shocked to hear of the death of Ed. When he played on our softball team he was the cornerstone. I will never forget the night he hit 3 home runs in one game! I have been in your place, as you may know, and I know it is a very trying time especially just before Christmas. May God be with you and your family. Tom Mix
When a loved one is lost, it’s often said that a part of you goes with them. While this is true, it’s also true that a part of that loved one stays with us. Ed touched countless lives with his love and compassion…whether it was in the community at large, at work, or at play…his was a friendship that we will cherish forever. We fondly remember getting together at the shore, on the links and hearing Ed say “love ya man!”. It was an honor and privilege to be considered his friend. We’ll miss the man, the mentor, the coach, the counselor and our dear friend, Ed Duffy. Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with you Jan and your lovely family during this difficult time. May his memory be eternal.
Dear Jan and family, I just learned of Ed’s passing and extend our prayers at this time. It was always a pleasure to work with Ed in whatever way while I was at Catoctin Mountain Park
Jan & Family, We are so sorry to hear of Ed’s death. We keep you in our hearts and prayers.
Dear Jan and Family, Thinking of you at this sad time and sending sincere condolences. I first met Ed when I began my NPS career in NCR in 1976 and greatly enjoyed working with him until I moved west in 1980. Later I followed Ed as the manager at Great Falls Park, Va. in 1984 and worked with Ed again in the mid 90s when I was in the Washington Office. My daughter, Jenny, a seasonal NCR employee two years ago, enjoyed meeting Ed and working with him as well. He will be greatly missed. Joan Anzelmo, Colorado National Monument
So sorry to hear of Ed Duffy’s passing. He was our assistant basketball coach many years ago. He was the one who taught me how to shoot a foul shot! I also had the pleasure of working with him in the NPS. May he rest in peace.
I am very sorry to hear about Ed. We played softball together in the seniors league in Fairfax County and he was a great member of the Silver Streaks team, always carring about others.
Dear Jan and family, I am so sorry to hear of Ed’s recent passing. He was such a wonderful guy and always brought a smile to everyone he encountered. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Love, Tony
My thoughts and prayers are with you all! I will always be thankful for the kindness Ed showed me as I began my NPS career.
Dear Jan and Family, Ed’s smiling face will be greatly missed in our neighborhood. We always enjoyed chatting with him. Rocky will miss the dog biscuits Ed and your granddaughter used to leave on our porch. Please accept our condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
I’m so sorry about your loss. I lost my Dad to lung cancer this time of the year a number of years ago and it still gives me pause. Ed and all of you are in my thoughts and prayers. I learned of Ed’s illness and his passing the same day. The intial news took my breath away and I stopped what I was doing and prayed for Ed and all of you. I knew Ed for nearly nine years working with him at different times at NPS in the Regional Office. Ed always made me feel as ifhe was glad to see me. He had a generosity of spirit in everything he did the extent of which was only rivaled by his sense of humor. He made me feel as if we were friends even though I knew that we were just co-workers. I so enjoyed his stories about helping make Great Falls safe because it was work that he knew was important and he did it well. I also enjoyed hearing about you Jan and your children. He knew he was special to be loved by each of you. He loved you all and I’m sure he is waiting to be with you again. The world was a better place to be with Ed Duffy around. I will keep him and all of you in my prayers. All my best, Glenn Eugster
It was a great pleasure to meet Ed………He inspired me with his love for his family. He will always be a part of our life.
