Of Vienna, VA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 21, 2017. He is survived by his son Bill Bonner’s wife, Jessie Chen Bonner of Newnan, GA, son Bob Bonner (Lynn) of Fairfax, VA, daughter Janet Davis (George) of Winchester, VA; and his grandchildren, Nathan, Rachel, Anne, Jonathan, Luke, and Daniel Bonner, and Joy Bonner Jones (Chris), and Amber and Arin Davis; and great-granddaughter Erikah Bonner Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Lee Tidmore Bonner, and his son, William (Bill) Elton Bonner. Elton was born Oct 30, 1920 in Goodwater, AL the sixth of seven children of a Methodist minister. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1942 with a major in English History. From1942-45 during WWII Elton served in the U. S. Army Air Force in India and Burma as a Morse code radio operator. After the war he earned his MA degree (History, English, School Administration) on the GI Bill. His career in education included teaching history, plane geometry and driver's education, in addition to administrative responsibilities in Bay Minette, AL, and the principalship and opening of a new consolidated high school in Franklin County, VA, where the school auditorium was later named for him. Elton also served as the first principal of James Madison High School in Vienna, VA from 1959-1968. Afterward Elton worked in the Fairfax County Central Personnel Office for 13 years until his retirement in May of 1980. In retirement, Elton served as a preliminary judge for the “USA Today” “All-USA College Academic Team Awards”. A memorial service to celebrate Elton’s life will be held on Saturday July 29, 2017 at 2 pm at Wesley United Methodist Church, 711 Spring Street SE, Vienna, VA 22180. Inurnment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
