Born in: Ironton, Ohio
Resided in: Great Falls , Virginia

Kitty Cox (born Flora Katherine Barnhart) of Great Falls, Virginia died surrounded by her loving family on August 10, 2025. She was the devoted mother of Kathy Ann Cox Allen (Gene), Karen Lynn Propheter (John), and Carolyn Mae Brooks (Eric). She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Richard Earl Cox in 2020.

Kitty was born in Ironton, OH on August 28, 1937, and grew up in Cincinnati, OH. She graduated from Linwood High School and immediately went to work at the Cincinnati Gas and Electric Company, where she met the love of her life, Richard. They married on January 26, 1957.

While raising her family, Kitty attended the University of Connecticut and received a BA degree in English in 1977. As a professional writer, she wrote 600 published articles on a myriad of topics to include business, family, health, law enforcement, weddings, and women.

During her life, Kitty was an active volunteer in every place she lived including Cincinnati, OH, Charleston, WV, Stamford, CT, and Great Falls, VA. For her daughters, she served as room mother at school, on the PTA, and a girl scout leader and cookie Mom. She was a member of the Junior League, Eastern Stars, and Charleston Volunteer Fire Department. She served on the Board of the Great Falls Woman’s Club and the Telecommunications Exchange for the Deaf, she was a co-founder of the Newcomer’s Club of Great Falls, and Director and President of the Great Falls Women’s Club Scholarship

Fund. She received the volunteer activist award for the Washington, DC metropolitan area, Woman of the Year from the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Great Falls, VA, and honored with a Great Falls Women’s Club and Scholarship Fund Lifetime Achievement Award.

She was a 45-year member of the McLean Baptist Church where she worked in the nursery, volunteered at Bible Day Camp, and taught English as a second language to international students.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her family whom she loved dearly. She had 6 grandchildren: Katherine Dombkoski (Stephen), Rebecca Allen, Victoria Propheter, Alexandra Brooks, Christina Propheter, and Brandon Brooks. She eagerly attended and supported all of their interests from theater performances, travel softball, travel ice hockey, soccer and basketball, ballet and piano recitals, dance team performances, as well as their graduations, and academics. She loved the annual family vacations to Bethany Beach, reading a good book, and looking out at her beautiful backyard graced with flowering trees, deer, and fox.

No one ever loved a family more. She was our greatest cheerleader and taught us the importance of family, faith, love, and tradition. We will miss her dearly and will hold her in our hearts all the days of our lives.

McLean Baptist Church will be streaming the service starting at 12:00 pm.
