OBITUARY FOR FLORENCE GRAGAN BAER
FLORENCE GRAGAN BAER “Flo”
Florence Gragan Baer, beloved wife, mother, and “mom-mom,” passed away at the age
of 91 on March 2, 2024, in comfort and peace surrounded by her daughters at Blue Ridge
Hospice, Winchester, Virginia of complications from Alzheimer’s Disease.
Flo was born on August 29, 1932 to John Marshall Gragan and Vergie Lyon Gragan, and grew
up in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. She attended Strayer’s Business College and started her
career with Systematics General Corporation in Accounts Receivable. She continued to work in
the accounting profession for over forty years.
On December 20, 1952 Flo married John Carlyle Baer, the love of her life and a newly
commissioned U.S. Air Force Lieutenant. Together they traveled extensively in the U.S. and
abroad before settling in McLean, Virginia and raising three daughters.
Flo loved to travel and had a special place in her heart for the Outer Banks. In addition, she
enjoyed gardening, birds, Boston Terriers, and spending time with family and friends. She was
active at St. John’s Episcopal Church teaching Sunday school and served on the altar guild.
Flo was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband. She is survived by her
Daughters, Lynn Toloczko (Matthew), Christa Brunjes, and Diane Bottenfield (Joe); adored
Grandchildren, Lauren (Brian), Daniel, Michael, Ian (Elizabeth), Rachel, Alec, Kyle, Evan, and
Anna; great-grandchildren, Kinlee and Kanan; her sister, Harriet McCollum and two nephews.
Funeral services will be held on March 18, 2024 at 12 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 6715
Georgetown Pike, McLean, Virginia. In lieu of flowers please consider making a memorial
