June 15, 1941 ~ August 13, 2026

Gautam Subodh Kaji was a devoted and doting husband, father, and grandfather  whose personal and professional life reflected wisdom, integrity, courage, leadership, and a deep commitment to service.  Born on June 15, 1941, in Mumbai, India, and passing away on August 13, 2026, in McLean, Virginia, Gautam completed his earthly journey with the enthusiasm, dignity and grace that marked every chapter of his life. He departed this physical world leaving behind a legacy of compassion, leadership, and inspiration that will continue to guide all who knew him in varied aspects of his life.

Gautam ‘s values were rooted in humility, perseverance, a global and forward-looking vision, and the belief that a meaningful life is defined by living by the courage of one’s convictions.  His life was not measured only by titles or accomplishments, but by the countless lives he touched through his kindness, his insight, and his steady encouragement. He was loving in his relationships, wise in his counsel, and adventurous in his spirit. These qualities made him a source of strength to his family, friends, colleagues, and all who were blessed to know him.

After leaving India, he moved to the U.S., and studied finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he refined the knowledge that would later support a remarkable career in international development. Gautam became a leader and pioneer in development finance and poverty alleviation at the World Bank, dedicating more than 60 years to work that helped shape opportunities for communities across the globe. His professional life was guided by a profound sense of purpose. He believed that economic progress should be tied to human dignity, and he devoted his talents to advancing that vision with intelligence, patience, and integrity. Through his work, he helped build pathways toward greater stability, fairness, and hope for people in need.

Beyond his professional achievements, Gautam gave generously of his time and energy to non-profits addressing wildlife conservancy around the world. His love for nature was not casual but deeply felt. He recognized the sacred connection between humanity and the living world, and he supported efforts to protect the beauty and balance of creation. His passion for wildlife reflected a broader reverence for life itself, and it was one more expression of the compassion that defined his journeys with his family and colleagues to the far corners of adventure around the world. He was also a passionate tennis player, a gifted photographer, and a global traveler who embraced the richness of different cultures and landscapes with curiosity and joy.

Gautam’s family was central to his life, and he cherished the bonds he shared with his wife and best friend of 58 years, Perveez G. Kaji, his son and mentee, Suneel Gautam Kaji, his grandson Holden Suneel Kaji, and daughter-in-law,  Lillian Lee , his siblings, Dhruv Kaji and Aparna Shah Kaji, and of course his beloved legions of Labrador Retrievers (Blackie, Ace, Sydney, and Leilani). He valued family as a sacred trust, and he nurtured those relationships with warmth, attention, and enduring love. In his presence, others felt seen, heard, and encouraged. He had the rare ability to offer both practical wisdom and spiritual reassurance, reminding those around him that challenges are not the end of the path, but often the beginning of deeper understanding. He was literally there through thick and thin, good times and bad.

Gautam understood, in his own way, that life’s trials can become sources of wisdom and grace. He met the world with resilience and generosity, and he encouraged others to do the same. His memory will continue to shine in the hearts of those who loved him, in the institutions he strengthened, and in the many causes he supported. Though he has left the physical world, the spirit of his life remains, offering inspiration to all who seek to live with meaning, courage, and devotion.

Given that Gautam’s favorite places away from home were St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, the Masai Mara in Kenya, and the South Pacific, a portion of his ashes will be spread by his family in these locations, as well as in India, so that his spirit and physical remains will forever be close.   May Gautam Subodh Kaji rest in peace, embraced by divine light and eternal remembrance. His life was a blessing, his example a guide, and his legacy a sacred gift to all who carry his memory forward even in the pain of the current moment.
