It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gene Earl Olsen. A husband, father, and friend, Gene peacefully passed away on December 17 at his home in McLean, Virginia surrounded by his wife and son. Born on February 24, 1949 in Brooklyn, New York, Gene was known for his diligence, intelligence, and persistence.
Graduating Cum Laude from The School of Engineering at The City College at The City University of New York in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Brooklyn Law School with a Juris Doctor in 1976, Gene dedicated his career to the oil industry and served as an executive at ExxonMobil. He cherished opportunities to develop professionally and explored overseas assignments such as Tokyo, London, and Sydney.
A passionate traveler, Gene explored the world with an insatiable curiosity and camera in hand. From remote landscapes to bustling cityscapes, his keen eye for detail and love for storytelling through images illuminated the beauty of his travel experiences. Each of his travels resulting in a photo book for his observations and sharing his adventures at gatherings with friends and family.
Gene had a love of music and enchanted the hearts of those around him with the soulful tunes that emanated from his cherished Excelsior accordion. Whether it was a lively Norwegian folk dance or a heartfelt ballad, his music had the power to create lasting memories with friends and families. His larger-than-life personality was influenced by his avid appetite for knowledge which was satiated by his love of literature and using his extensive vocabulary.
Gene is survived by his loving wife Tone K. Olsen, his children Mona Anita K. Olsen and Kristian T. Olsen (Natalie) and his grandchildren Tonella Grace K. Olsen and Cade E. Olsen. His legacy of planning and preparation will endure in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
Per his wishes, there will be no formal service. The family appreciates the thoughts and condolences during this time of reflection. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in memory of Gene Earl Olsen.
