George Elmer Curtis

george curtis

August 1, 1932 ~ November 22, 2025

Born in: Franklin, North Carolina
Resided in: Vienna, Virginia

George was known by many names—Dad, Daddy, Pop, Pawpaw Curtis, and Uncle Elmer—and he wore each one with pride. He never met a stranger. And if you were a woman who crossed his path, you could count on receiving a Werther’s candy from him. Even during hospital stays and countless medical appointments, he continued handing out his Werther’s, brightening the day of every nurse, tech, or visitor who walked into the room.

Even up to the day before he passed, when asked how he was doing, his answer was always the same: “Great and wonderful!” He chose to be positive in a world that is at times very negative.

George was the youngest of eight children born August 1, 1932 to George A. & Neppie S. Curtis and the last surviving member of his siblings. He was cherished by many nieces and nephews, and every summer when family came to visit for a week, he was celebrated as the successful hometown hero—loved deeply by all who knew him.

Born in Franklin North Carolina, he served in the army after WWII and served to clean up Germany. After getting out of the army, he settled in Northern Virginia. He learned many building skills while working at Soldiers Home for several years. He then took those skills to create his own business, George Curtis Home improvements for over 60 years, adding Steven Curtis as a partner in the 1980s. Steve still runs the business today. He was a regular attender of Charity Baptist Church in McLean.

He is survived by his significant other, Martha McNaughton; his children, Linda Curtis Wheeler (Jamie Wheeler), Steven Curtis (Eleanor Curtis), and Patricia Curtis Crimmel (Brett Crimmel); and his daughter-in-law, Karen Curtis (Randy Curtis preceded him in death in 2022). He was blessed with ten grandchildren—Joshua Curtis Wheeler, Melissa Wheeler Bergey (Dustin Bergey), Shelly Wheeler Theroux (Joshua Theroux), Brittany Crimmel, Zachary Crimmel, Jacob Crimmel, Kevin Curtis (Sham Suri), Rebecca Curtis, Nicole Curtis, and Matthew Curtis—and one great-granddaughter, Joy Bergey.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Glenna Lee Sager Curtis (d.2017).

Services Visitation will be held at Money & King Funeral Home in Vienna, Virginia, on Monday, December 1st, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Money & King, followed by burial at Mount Jackson Cemetery.

  2. What a dandy fellow. Always happy and positive and if you spent more than 5 minutes with him you left in a great mood.
He was always helpful and it made him happy to be able to do something for you or loan you a tool. Just an all around great guy.

  3. George was such an amazing man. He was always so positive and happy. Every time me and my children would see him. George would have a big smile and would tell us jokes. He then would reach in his pocket and hand us a piece of candy. He was just so sweet and cute. There needs to be more George Curtis’s in this world to spread happiness and positivity that he showed everyone he met. George will be greatly missed by all that knew him. ❤️🕊️
Love, Wendy, Jasmin and Jaydan Michael
