Gregory David Protiva
March 31, 1970 – October 9, 2025
Gregory David Protiva, beloved husband, father, son, brother, and uncle, passed away suddenly on October 9, 2025, at the age of 55.
He is survived by his loving wife, Francesca Lovaglio, and their children, Colten, Aiden, and Hudson. He is also survived by his parents, James and Val Protiva; brothers, Ed and Jim Protiva; and sister, Amy (Protiva) Kelly. Greg is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Born on March 31, 1970, Greg grew up in Vienna, Virginia. He spent his youth active in sports, skiing with his family, and working numerous jobs. A proud graduate of James Madison High School (Class of 1988), he went on to attend Clemson University, earning his degree in 1992 and developing a lifelong love for his alma mater.
Greg spent his entire career as a Loan Officer, where he helped countless clients achieve their dreams of homeownership and built lasting professional relationships and friendships. In addition, he owned and managed several properties, taking great pride in maintaining and improving them. Handy by nature, Greg loved working with his hands—whether it was fixing or creating something or tending to his yard.
Above all, Greg was the devoted father of three sons, of whom he was immensely proud. He was not only their dad but also their coach, mentor, and biggest fan—always on the sidelines cheering them on. During COVID, Greg rented a sprinter van and embarked on a cross-country adventure with his wife and children, visiting family and friends along the way. Ever the planner and prankster, he loved flying in family members, so everyone could be surprised!
Greg and Francesca had recently celebrated 20 years of marriage, built on friendship, laughter, and shared adventure. Greg could always make Fran laugh—a gift he gave often—and together they created memories that will last a lifetime. The love they had for one another, and their sons will forever live on in their hearts.
Greg will be remembered for his infectious sense of humor, his love for family and friends, and his remarkable ability to bring people together. Whether it was his Men of Mervar ski trips, gatherings at his Shenandoah cabin, or beach days at his home in Duck, North Carolina, Greg lived for good times, great company, and making everyone feel special. His zest for life, big heart, and quick wit were unmatched.
He will be dearly missed and forever loved.

Greg was an amazing friend. I was blessed for the past 25 years of knowing and working with him. He always made me laugh and was so generous with his time and wisdom. I will miss him dearly.
He was one of those rare people everyone liked — kind, humble, and always genuine. A great athlete and an even better friend, he carried his warmth and loyalty through life, touching everyone around him. He’ll be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
Last time I saw you two was at your wedding.
Keeping a special place in my heart.
Greg was such a special friend to me. He always said what he thought and made a point to say things that made other people feel good. We have countless stories in our workout community of things Greg did to bring happiness to others. Truly one of a kind — and not just because he carried his weights in a Yeti cooler to the lot. I miss him so much.
I had the pleasure of knowing Greg for many years as a friend, colleague, and even a competitor at times. He always made the effort to check in, offer advice, or just BS for a while. Whenever we could, we would sneak in a calorie-filled lunch we didn’t need.
Greg’s humor was truly one of a kind and you had to know him to really appreciate it.
Take care Greg. You will truly be remembered my friend. Rest in peace.
You are dearly missed my friend. You have been a great friend, mentor as we coached dozens of kids over the years. I will always cherish your before and after team huddles. You inspired a lot of people. Rest in peace my friend.
Lokesh.
Charlie and I still remember the day that Greg came into our Avery Hess office in Centreville to drop off rate sheets and chat up any agent that would give him a minute. He made us a promise that day, if we would just allow him one opportunity to serve our clients, to never, ever promise something he couldn’t deliver. We took the chance and he didn’t disappoint and he was always our first recommendation with buyers. In the process of building an enduring business relationship he became a true friend. We shared many fun times on our boat and his, we met Fran when they first started dating, and the four of us made memories together on the Bay that still make me smile. Our lunches together were special, and he never failed to check in, even after our retirement. We loved each other, had a special friendship that I cherish the memories of and always will. My heart and my prayers go out to Fran, the boys and the Protiva family. We love you all.
Such a sweet and funny guy. My thoughts and prayers are with his amazing family.
