H. Gay Haran

November 27, 1929 ~ March 16, 2015
Obituary:
Gay Haran began her early adventures in Centerville, Alabama on Nov 27, 1929. She left Fairfax, Virginia, her most recent home, for her next adventure on March 16, 2015. She grew up in Washington, D. C. where her family moved when she was 3. She earned Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Spanish from George Washington University where she was an honor student, a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and active in student life.
She was a career U.S. intelligence officer, spending many years in Central and South America and was recognized many times for her superior work, including receiving a Certificate of Appreciation and Grateful Recognition for Her Superior Contribution to the Law Enforcement Responsibilities of the U. S. Secret Service.
After retiring from federal service, she attended Virginia Theological Seminary, where she excelled in reading, writing and interpretation of Ancient Hebrew. She received a Master of Divinity Degree from VTS and became a Lay Pastoral Assistant in the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Virginia where she worked as a chaplain at local hospitals and at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Annandale, VA. She was licensed by the Diocese to preach and took regular turns with the clergy preaching at St Alban's and leading other worship services.
In accordance with her belief that learning should be life-long, she worked to keep her knowledge and skills updated by regularly attended seminars and other educational events such as those hosted by the University of Richmond Claiborne Robins School of Business Management Institute and the Biblical Archaeology Society.
She was also active in her community, serving as President of the Blakeview Homeowner's Association for several years. The current beauty of that community and excellent relations between and among current homeowners attests to her leadership skills and dedication to community service.
She was confirmed at The Cathedral of St. Luke, Ancon, Canal Zone on September 5, 1976. She was a long time parishioner of St Alban's Episcopal Church in Annandale, VA.
She is survived by her nephew John Haran of Pentagon City, VA and niece Jana Lightner of Pasadena, MD.

My deepest sympathy to all of Gay’s family and friends. Gay was and will always be one of my most cherished friends. She was there the day I was born and supported me through all of life’s stages. I will miss her greatly. No matter how much time we have with some people, it is not enough.
Dear Gay – A true and loyal friend for some sixty five years. We will miss you. Know you will find a way to be useful and loving in the after life. Love from our whole family.

Dear Aunt Gay, The fondest of memories from my childhood will consist of you and your kind words. Always there at Christmas time – which I know was an important time for you and you chose to share it with us. May you rest in peace.
you will be so missed, dear gay.
sweet gay, I will miss you.
My deepest sympathy to the family. May the God of all comfort give you peace at this difficult time. And His promise of being reunited with our loved ones on a paradise earth where “death will be no more” Rev 21:4

Family and Friends, I know that this is a very difficult time. It’s never easy to lose someone you love but the Bible promises us at John 5:28,29 that you will see Gay again. Until then may your hearts be filled with the wonderful memories of joyful times spent together as you celebrate a life well lived. Please accept my condolences.
