We celebrate the life of Harrison Holland Hoft of Falls Church, VA, beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Born in 1932 in Wall Lake, Iowa, Harry was the son of Henry and Beulah North Hoft. He grew up on an Iowa farm. He died from complications of Alzheimer's Disease at home on June 26, 2016 at the age of 84, with his wife and son Alex holding his hand.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helyn Beatrice Stull, his daughter Niza (Timothy), daughter Kristen (Michael), son Alex, and his cherished grandchildren Noah, Madeline, Claudia, Kelley, Stephanie, and Samuel. After graduating high school Harry entered the U.S. Army where he worked as a draftsman from 1952-54 and received an Honorable Discharge. He received a Bachelor of Art's degree in 1956 and a Master's Degree from the University of Iowa in 1958. Harry moved to Washington D.C. and worked for various government agencies including the Federal Aviation Administration, Health, Education, and Welfare, and the Environmental Protection Agency. His service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador from 1962-64 was a lasting memory and a proud accomplishment.
Humble servant describes Harry well as he dedicated much of his free time to helping others. An active member in his church Harry was elected to serve as an Elder, volunteered as a Sunday School teacher, and participated in various committees including Mission, Refugee Resettlement, and Christmas in April. He also served as president of Share, a community social services organization providing food, shelter, and clothes to those in need.
A devoted father, Harry volunteered and coached his children in the McLean Youth Soccer and Basketball leagues, eventually becoming the McLean Youth Soccer President. He continued coaching after his children left home. A favorite pastime was vacationing with family along the beaches of North and South Carolina as well as spending time with relatives.
Harry's energy, charm, gentle humility, and wit endeared him to all who knew him. He was a lover of sports, especially soccer, the Washington Redskins, and Iowa football. He was also a competitive player of box games and cards. His interests included history, genealogy, travel, and jogging. At peace, in our hearts forever.
A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 1125 Savile Lane, McLean Virginia, on Saturday, July 9 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be sent to the church in Harry's honor.
