Helen McClafferty
Helen Ann McClafferty, age 89, passed away peacefully on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2018, at Tall Oaks Assisted Living in Reston, Virginia.
Mrs. McClafferty was raised by her loving parents, Mike and Katie McCoog, in Mahanoy Plane, Pennsylvania. After graduating with honors from St. Mary School of Nursing in Philadelphia, she worked as a surgical nurse at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. Her long nursing career which followed included working at Arlington Hospital, Fairfax Hospital, and Leewood Nursing Home in Annandale, Virginia where she was the Director of Nursing for almost twenty years. Helen McClafferty always took great pride in being a registered nurse and serving those in her care. She will be remembered for her special virtues of compassion, graciousness, and strength.
Helen’s husband of sixty-five years, Hugh D. McClafferty, preceded her in death two years ago. All who knew this extraordinary couple were witness to their magical love story. Hugh and Helen McClafferty were founding members of St. Mark Catholic Church in Vienna, Virginia. Joyfully they raised their five children, who survive them – Patrick McClafferty of Reston, VA; Rosanne (Tom) White of Oakton, VA; Dennis (Rosemary) McClafferty of Orlando, FL; Michael McClafferty of Phoenix, AZ; and Ellen Ann Valliere of Ashburn, VA. They had ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service for Helen McClafferty will be held for family and friends this coming Mother’s Day week-end. Helen will then be interred alongside her husband at Arlington National Cemetery. Online condolences and fond memories of Helen may be offered to the family at www.moneyandking.com
