Jack Cornelius Pleasant passed Friday April 18th, with his family by his side at Virginia Hospital Center.

Jack was born on September 30th, 1927, to the late Bunyon (Jack) and Othello (Pattie) Pleasant in Tampa, Florida, where he lived until the age of 13 when his father passed. Jack then moved to Washington DC. Jack went to Roosevelt High School in DC, where he was a cadet, and upon graduation in 1945, immediately joined the United States Navy where his rate was Storekeeper, until WWII ended.

Jack married Georgianne Walton in 1948, had three of their 4 children before graduating from American University with a degree in Public Administration. Jack worked his entire career at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). He was a highly regarded and integral member of the FDIC's Senior Executive Service when he retired in 1986 as The Director of the FDIC Office of Personnel Management. He also played on the agency softball team, and led the team in hitting several seasons, as he was known for his speed.

Jack loved hunting and fishing. In fact he held the Chesapeake Bay record for a Black Drum caught in 1969. He used to say "you can't beat my drum". He loved the Redskins, and his love for baseball came back to him when the Nationals came to Washington. Jack was an active member in the Lemon Road Civic Association, and was a charter member of The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.

Jack is survived by his wife of 66 years, Georgianne, and 4 children and their families: James Pleasant (Elizabeth), of Arlington, VA., Gerald Pleasant (Alitia) of Aldie, VA, Kathryn Pleasant (Albert Boyce) of Great Falls, VA, and John Pleasant of Mclean VA. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Melissa, Jessica, Karen, Amy, Brian, Jeffrey, Johanna, Samantha and Emily; and 8 Great Grandchildren. Jack was pre-deceased by his beloved daughter-in-law Rhonda Pleasant.

Family and friends are invited to Jack's Life Celebration at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 Maple Avenue, Vienna, VA on Wednesday April 23, from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Religious Services will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1545 Chain Bridge Road, McLean VA on Thursday April 24, at 11:00 There will a reception at the church following the services. I had the good fortune of spending my career with Jack at the FDIC and have wonderful memories of his friendship, love of life and family, and his dedication to the people at the Agency. He was one of the few people in life that you feel blessed to have known.

  5. I am so sorry to hear of Jack’s passing. I had the pleasure of being his secretary for many years prior to his retirement from the FDIC. He was such a nice man. Always wanted to make you happy. RIP Jack and thanks for hiring me!
