James (Jim) Dana Pammel August 15, 1930 – August 6, 2022

James Dana Pammel passed away at Inova Loudoun Hospital on August 6, 2022 with his loving wife of 68 years, Evelyn, and his daughter, son-in-law and grandson at his side.

Jim was born and raised in Washington, D.C. on the grounds of the Old Soldiers’ Home (now Armed Forces Retirement Home) by his parents Mona and Harold (“Pete”, who was head of grounds).

After leaving Washington for Iowa, Jim graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Landscape Architecture in 1956 with help from the G.I. Bill after serving 2+ years in the Coast Guard during the Korean War.

The majority of his career was spent working in Zoning Administration, Comprehensive Planning and serving on the Board of Zoning Appeals for Fairfax County. After retiring and earning a Masters of Public Administration at George Mason University, he went to work for the town of Purcellville, VA as Assistant Town Manager.

Jim and Evelyn raised their children Stephen and Susan in Vienna, where Jim enjoyed spending time with his neighbors, particularly their Yeonas Drive and Rocky Branch Road friends, tending to his garden, watching Washington’s sports teams and spending time with his grandchildren.

Jim and Evelyn lived in Vienna until 2017 when they moved to the Ashby Ponds Retirement Community in Ashburn.

Jim is survived and will be missed by his wife Evelyn, daughter Susan Venetianer (David Venetianer) of Chadds Ford, PA, granddaughters Megan Venetianer of Denver, CO, and Jessica Venetianer of New Orleans, LA, grandson Robert Pammel of Reston, VA as well as Nephews Fred Roeder (Tina Roeder) of Fernandina Beach FL, Wayne Roeder of Newport Richey, FL and James Pammel of Bennettsville, SC and niece Kathy Dixon of Churchton, MD.

Jim was Predeceased by his brother Peter Pammel of Cheyene WY and his son Stephen Pammel of Vienna, VA.

Graveside services will be held at Fairfax Memorial Park on Monday, August 22 at 1:00pm.

  1. We always looked forward to our wonderful Thanksgiving get-togethers. Though turkey was always a tradition on the holiday, Jim’s request that Bernie make him a martini became a tradition as well. It was a personal shared experience and led to humorous discussions regarding the problems of their respective home sports teams. Though we usually saw Jim once a year at Thanksgiving, we also got to spend some happy occasions (grandchildren’s graduations and Susan’s birthday) with him. Jim will be missed by all.
