James H. McDaniel, Jr.

Jim’s family sadly announces his passing on March 25, 2020. He was born in Sunbury, PA on January 19, 1940 to James H. McDaniel, Sr. and Ethel May (Bilger) McDaniel, now deceased.

Jim grew up in central PA and graduated from Milton Area High School in 1958. In 1962 he graduated from Susquehanna University with a B.S. in Economics and then began a 35-year career with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development in Philadelphia, PA. In 1978 he relocated to the Office of the Assistant Director of HUD Headquarters in Washington, DC, where he served as Headquarters liaison with HUD field offices in California, Texas and Louisiana. In 1982 until his retirement, he served as Director of HUD’s DC Field Office, where he directed a staff of professionals providing services to local government and nonprofit organizations who received HUD financial assistance. During his career, he served as HUD’s representative to the Washington Council of Government’s Task Forces on Homelessness and Housing and the Prince George’s County, MD Bankers Task Force.

After retirement, Jim served on the Board of Directors of Community Family Life Services and as a consultant to Dennison & Associates, both Washington DC private non-profit organizations.

When fully retired Jim indulged in favorite past-time, the game of golf. He was a respected member of River Bend Golf and Country Club in Great Falls, VA and Reston National Golf Course in Reston, VA and acquired many great friends through golf. As a volunteer, he assisted the Langley High School golf coach and aided many golfing friends of all ages in lowering their golf scores.

He is survived by his adoring wife, of 56 years, Cecelia Kate (Moyer) McDaniel, their children, Heather and Scott McDaniel, their granddaughter, Patrice Arca and great-grandson, Antonio Caesar Chaves, Jim’s sister-in-law, Helen Fetzer, and a niece and two nephews. His brother, Robert Fetzer, predeceased him.

Funeral arrangements were private. A Celebration of Life will be held in the coming months. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s honor to US Special Olympics, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or a charity of choice.

Jim’s family wishes to thank the staffs of Atria Senior Living and Tall Oaks Memory Care facilities for their compassionate care of their husband and father and friends and neighbors for their kindness.

  1. Jim was a dear friend for many years – golf and lunch and lots and lots of chatting, with a golf tip always at the ready. The brightness of his presence will be sorely missed. I feel honored to have known him. Bill Myers

  2. Jim, Mac, was a larger than life individual who I met through River Bend G&CC. Over 20 years, I played possibly a thousand rounds of golf and shared 4 thousand beers afterwards with Jim. He was a man of the highest integrity and honesty who played the game the way he lived: by the rules. Many of our rounds were played in a foursome of all Jim’s: Mc Daniel, Rafferty, Anderson, and me. He was a gentle and very strong man: you did not want him to grip you by the back of the neck. My wife, Aurelia, and I last saw Jim by chance at Reston Golf Club about 10 years ago when we were visiting our kids and grand kids in the area. We were able to only spend a few minutes but it brought back floods of memories. Our best wishes to Kate and family. Jim, a life well played. T (aka Jim Temenak)
