Joan Ellen Carney

joan carney
According to God's plan, Joan left this earth on September 27, 2012 with her family by her side. She endured a courageous and admirable struggle with cancer until she fell into the arms of God.

Joan has been reunited with the love of her life, James A. Carney, whom she married in 1954 and had 38 years of loving marriage until his passing in 1992. She is also preceded in death by her brother and sister, Jimmy Slater and Theresa Rohrbach, and nephew, Matthew Martin.

Joan was born on March 11, 1932 and raised in Oklahoma City, OK. She attended nursing school at St. Anthony's Hospital and became a Registered Nurse where she touched many lives with her gentle hands and loving compassion to help others.

She leaves to mourn her loss, her loving children, Mark (Anna), Mary, Cathy (Gary), Jimmy (Carolyn), Carolyn (Carl) and Ashley who was much a daughter as a granddaughter, whom she helped raise since birth and shared her home with. In all, Joan has 13 grandchildren, Katie, Patrick, Ashley, Alexandra, James, Carney, Erin, Elizabeth, Colin, Connor, Carson, Maggie and Sarah; one great-grandchild, Lucas and a loving and devoted sister Paula, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was a devoted Catholic, an active member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish where she continued to touch many lives through her volunteering, prayers and presence.

After the interment at Fairfax Memorial Park everyone is invited to Joan's home to gather and celebrate her life.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to The Little Sisters of the Poor, 1503 Michaels Rd., Henrico, VA 23229.

To our mom and granny: your bright blue eyes will shine forever; we love you with all our hearts.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I WAS FORTUNATE TO HAVE JOAN AS A CLIENT AND, BETTER YET, AS A WARM ASSOCIATE AND NEIGHBOR. I ALSO KNEW HER LATE HUSBAND, JIM, AND AM STILL LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE HER DAUGHTER, MARY, AND HER GRANDDAUGHTER, ASHLEY, AS BOTH CLIENTS AND, FOR MARY IN PARTICULAR, A FAMILY FRIEND. JOAN WAS A TRULY LOVELY PERSON. SHE WILL FIT WELL IN THE LOVING ARMS OF GOD.

  2. Great memories from Carney family visits. When we were little, Aunt Joan always there to provide love, good food, and a safe haven for all the “kids” (including the dads who were romping in the yard with us). Especially happy to see her surrounded by her sisters, kids, nieces and nephews in OKC in 2008. The pics of her on NW 20th, and of all of us in front of County Line are priceless. We will miss her. Take care of each other; that is what gets you through these times. God bless Joan.

  3. It is unfortunate that we are not able to be there to put our arms around you, but know that all of you are in our thoughts daily. Aunt Joanie was a very special part of our lives and we will never forget her laugh, her sense of humor, her love for all of us and her big blue eyes. No doubt she is looking down upon us with great company. God bless Joanie and her family.

  4. The Nelson family all send our deepest sympathy on the loss of a wonderful Mom, Grandmother and sister. We had such a short visit but the love and fun around her was so evident, wish we had been able to get to know her better. God seems to do things we don’t quite understand but he also has His plan, and for Joan it was not a life of pain, take strenght in knowing she is now happy and with her beloved Jim. God be with all of you.The Nelson family

  5. My memories of Joan are sweet as she: gentle, compassionate, always giving and a smile like no other. Her voice matched her smile; I never heard her raise her voice except to laugh. We have lost a wonderful companion in life. God will indeed welcome her. Love, Peg
