Joan Henderson Flanders, age 88, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2024. Joan was born on June 10, 1935, to James and Beatrice Henderson in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Carlow College in 1957 with a degree in Nursing. Early in her career, she worked at the National Institute of Health and then at Georgetown University. As her family grew, Joan continued to stay active in nursing by volunteering with the Red Cross and the Shephard Center while eventually returning to work as a nurse with Upjohn in Washington DC and Fairfax County later in her career.
Joan loved her family and friends. She will be remembered for her kindness, warmth, and sense of humor. She always made sure everyone was taken care of and provided encouragement to others. She adored having her family around her and enjoyed family and friends gathering around her table to join in conversation, tea, and a meal, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Joan was an avid quilter and sewer. She delighted in making quilts and items for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Joan also loved her church community. She was an active member of the Missionhurst Mount Taber Community and was always available to lend a hand during celebrations & cooking wonderful food for the community. She is fondly remembered for making the annual King Cake for Mardi Gras. Joan also helped to coordinate outreach programs including delivering gifts and meals to needy families throughout the year, especially during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. She was cherished by the community for her generosity and kindness.
She is survived by her six children and their spouses; Bob and Nancy Flanders, Lisa and John Dix, Chele and Steve Kelly, Jim Flanders, Lori Flanders, Peter Flanders and Raquel Snyder; and her eight grandchildren and their spouses; Russ and Megan Dix, Matt Dix, Jeff and Elizabeth Dix, Kim Dix, Kyle Flanders, Nick Kelly, Jacqueline Flanders, Jessica Flanders; and three great grandchildren; Alyssa Dix, Levi Dix, Amelia Dix
She is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Robert S. Flanders Jr; her father and mother and three cousins.
The viewing will be from 6 to 8 pm on Thursday June 20, 2024 at Money and King Funeral Home in Vienna, Virginia. A funeral mass will be held at 10 am on Friday June 21, 2024, at Our Lady of Good Counsel followed by internment at the National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Saint Jude’s Hospital for Children.
