Joan Hattersley Hartley of Vienna, Virginia, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and teacher, passed away peacefully at her home in Vienna September 13, 2023. She was born in Baltimore, MD April 27,1931. She was 92.

She went to Montgomery Blair High School and had a BA in education from University of Maryland. She was a lifelong teacher and a strong advocate for education. She taught swimming as a teenager, taught elementary school in the fifties, then focused on raising her children, she earned a master’s from George Mason University in the 1976 and returned to teaching fulltime. She taught Special Ed and elementary Education for Prince William and Fairfax County for 20 years before retiring. For the next 20 years she taught Sunday school and tutored elementary age children in reading and math. She was a champion of children, caring advisor, friend to many and Matriarch of the family. Loved people, teaching, travel, loved to laugh, and loved life. She spent many happy summers at the Chalfont Hotel in Cape May, NJ.

She was predeceased by her husband John G. Hartley PhD; grandson William P. Hartley; nephew Charles Hattersley, brothers David R. Hattersley and Frederick J Hattersley Jr and her parents, Frederick J Hattersley and Lillian Potter Hattersley. She is survived by her sons; Paul, Christopher and his wife Heidi, and David and his wife Pearl; her grandchildren; Christopher, Andrew, Kristina, Jonathan, Benjamin, and Kate. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Steven, Kenneth, Ronald, David Hattersley, and Elise Anderes. In addition, she is survived by great grandchildren; Elianna, Damian, Zelie, Isaac, Ambrose, Eleanor, Evie-Joe, and Owen.

There will be a viewing Friday September 22 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 W Maple Ave. Vienna, VA 220180 The service will be Saturday, September 23 at 1:00 pm. At the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 2589 Chain Bridge Road, Vienna, Virginia 22181 This Service will be on the Churches Facebook for those who cannot make the Service. There will be a reception at the Church following the service.
