John Alexander Lax, a talented physicist and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2023, at his home in McLean, Virginia, at the age of 98.

Born on March 15, 1925, in Budapest, Hungary, Mr. Lax’s life spanned nearly a century of profound global change and was filled with personal achievement. He immigrated to the United States during World War II where he pursued higher education and earned a degree in Physics from New York University. His academic dedication laid the foundation for a distinguished career in naval ship engineering.

Mr. Lax spent most of his professional life as a physicist at the David Taylor Model Basin in Carderock, Maryland, where he contributed to advancements in naval ship design. His work reflected both his intellectual rigor and his commitment to innovation in maritime science.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mr. Lax was known for his deep love of literature and language. He found joy in reading and translating poetry, often sharing this passion with those around him. An avid traveler and walker, he embraced the world with curiosity and appreciation for its beauty and complexity.

John was deeply generous and kind-hearted, especially toward his children and grandchildren. His warmth and care left an enduring impression on those fortunate enough to know him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents Henry and Klara Lax. He was survived by his wife Frances Lax, brother Peter Lax; daughter Diana Martin and her husband Michael Martin; sons David Lax and Andrew Lax; grandchildren Misha Salim, Silva Lax, John Martin, Katherine Martin, and his nephew James Lax.

A memorial service was held to honor Mr. Lax’s life at the Fairfax Memorial Park in Fairfax, Virginia.
