John Roger Dolina

U.S. Navy Captain (retired) John Roger Dolina, 83, of Vienna, Virginia passed away on June 19th , 2021 at Reston Hospital surrounded by his family.
Born in 1938, John attended Niles Township High School in Skokie, Illinois before going to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana on a distinguished academic scholarship. While at Purdue he was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps and the Scabbard and Blade national military honor society. He graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy Supply Corps.
His 27 years of military service included serving on several ships, two combat tours in Vietnam, multiple shore duty assignments, and earning a Master’s degree in textile engineering from North Carolina State University. He retired in 1987 from the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command as a Captain having earned several military commendations, most notably a bronze star award with “V” device (for valor) for his service in Vietnam.
After retiring from the military, he worked for Cexec, Inc. as a Project manager and later as a consultant for the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Committee. Once retired, he enjoyed traveling the world with his wife and spending time with family.
John was a devoted Catholic attending mass regularly and assisting the church during special events. He enjoyed having his family over for dinners and watching his grandchildren grow. An avid reader he always enjoyed a good debate about history.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Virginia Dolina and his three children Stephen Dolina, John Dolina (Christina), Nancy Post (Charlie) and four grandchildren Benjamin, Caitlin, Josephine and Joshua Dolina. He also is survived by his sister Caroline Eyberg and her husband Eybie. He is predeceased by his parents, John and Dorothy (Work) Dolina, and his son, Michael Dolina.
The visitation will be at the Money & King Funeral Home located at 171 Maple Ave, Vienna, VA on Tuesday, June 29th, 2021 from 2:00-4:00 PM. A Catholic funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 30th, 2021 at 10:00 am at St. Athanasius Roman Catholic Church, 9201 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, VA with the burial to follow.
