I was so sorry to see John’s death in the Richmond Times-Dispatach. I live in Richmond where I believe John was from. I knew him at Virginia Tech when he was a member of Sigma Lambda fraternity where we all had many good times. I was glad to learn a bit about him in all the intervening years from his obituary. A very nice and very young man when I knew him but we all were. I was from Radford thus close to Blacksburg for many good times and friends, among them, John. My sympathy to all his family. I met John at InStep School of Dance in VA where I lived at the time. John was the charming, personable guy that everyone loved. I knew him best on the dance floor and that is where there will be a big hole now. Thoughts & prayers for him and his family. He will be missed.
To the family of Mr.Gouldin, I know that this is a very difficult time for you. We as humans were never meant to experience death. God’s purpose for us is that we live on the earth in perfect health forever. The Bible mentions a time when the ones who have died will rise again in John 5:28,29. Take comfort in knowing that you will see John again. Please accept my condolences.
I am so sorry to hear about John’s passing. I met John in 1988 at a ballroom dance and always enjoyed dancing with him. I also know John from the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics where he participated in many events including springboard diving and set records in his age group. I will miss John on the diving board and the dance floor.
I am saddened to hear of John’s passing. I was his diving instructor and I have been missing him at our Saturday diving classes. It was always a joy to have him around. I marveled at his willingness to try new things, his sense of humor and always upbeat attitude. Whenever I asked how he was, he always replied, “Fine as frog hair”.
John will be fondly remembered by fellow Olympians, not only in diving, but track, table tennis and miniature golf as well. In his age group (80-89) he won a gold medal in miniature golf in 2014 and set a record in 2012 which stands today. A true role model.
