Jonathan Holtaway

jonathan holtaway

On September 4, 2026, surrounded by his family, Jonathan “Jon” David Holtaway of Vienna, Virginia, passed away peacefully after a life filled with adventure, love, family, friendship, and an abiding curiosity about the world around him. He was 55 years old.

Jon was born in Independence, Missouri, on March 20, 1971. From the very beginning, he was destined for an adventurous life. As his father’s career took the family around the world, Jon grew up in Tunisia, Virginia, Sudan, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Barbados. These experiences shaped his lifelong love of travel, exploration, and discovering new places and people. Yet no matter where life took him, summers in Missouri with his beloved grandparents gave him a place to call home.

He eventually settled in Philadelphia, where he attended the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, earning a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a Bachelor of Arts in History.

After college, Jon began his career with Danielson & Associates, where he quickly established himself as a leader in the banking consulting business. In 2005, he founded Ategra Capital Management and was later joined by Jacques Rebibo. Together, they built not only a successful company, but a community and a second family. Jon was deeply proud of Ategra and, most importantly, of the people with whom he shared the journey.

In 2000, Jon and Tara, the love of his life, settled in Vienna, Virginia, where they began building their family and a life surrounded by friends. They welcomed their three children, Daniel, Fiona, and Caitlin, and created a home which was open to all friends and neighbors.

It started with two red Adirondack chairs in the front yard. Those chairs became an invitation. Friends came, and then more friends came. What followed were years of barbecues, evening fire pits, basketball games, impromptu gatherings, 80s music, unforgettable fireworks displays on July 4th, and plenty of shenanigans. Jon had a gift for bringing people together and making everyone feel like they belonged. The neighborhood became family, and those friendships became some of the most treasured relationships of his life.

Family was at the center of everything Jon did. He was a devoted husband and father, a beloved son and brother, and a favorite uncle, affectionately known as the “Funcle” to his nieces and nephews. He was generous with his time, his energy, his ideas, and his love.

Jon approached life with enthusiasm and an appetite for adventure. He loved to travel, play and watch tennis, gather people around a table, cook and share good food and wine, plan the next adventure, and, whenever possible, include as many people as he could. He was known for his wit, generosity, thoughtfulness, and an ability to turn an ordinary gathering into a memorable occasion.

Jon is survived by his wife of 26 years, Tara; their three children, Daniel, Fiona, and Caitlin; his mother, Deneith Holtaway; his sisters, Leslie Holtaway and Stephanie Joos; brother-in-law Don Joos; father-in-law Raymond Heffernan; and sister-in-law Anne Heffernan.

He was also a beloved “Funcle” to Sarah Hearton (Chris), Rachel Hearton Mantha (Colin), John “Jack” Hearton (Heidi), Connor Joos, Austin Joos, and Owen Joos; and a great-uncle to Elorie, Kellen, Soraia, Luka, Millie, and Noah.

Jon’s father, James Holtaway, preceded him in death.

A wake will be held at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 Maple Avenue W, Vienna, VA 22180, on Friday, September 11th between 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mark Catholic Church, 9970 Vale Road, Vienna, VA 22181, on Saturday, September 12, at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Jon Holtaway Memorial Fund for Leadership Mission International, an organization that he was deeply passionate about, that supports young women in rural Honduras through education, leadership training and faith centered community. Donations may be made at https://secure.qgiv.com/for/jonholtawaymemorialfund/

Jon’s love of life, his generosity, his humor, and his extraordinary ability to bring people together will live on in his family, his friends, and the countless memories and stories they will share. He will be deeply loved, deeply missed, and never forgotten

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I always admired your strength in the quiet moments, your kindness when no one was watching, and your ability to keep moving forward, even when the road wasn’t easy.
If I could give you one last gift, it would be the chance to see yourself through my eyes—and through the eyes of so many who loved you. I hope you truly know how deeply you are cherished and loved. Rest in Peace lil brother.

  2. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. I will miss my cousin immensely. He was kind, thoughtful and an example of what people should aspire to be. I will cherish our childhood memories together and our time spent together at our grandparents house in the summer. Love and prayers for peace and comfort. Jill

  3. Jon was a wonderful person in every way. I had the pleasure of working with him as well as being his good friend.
Jon was smart and talented as well as a quality person and special friend. I had just taken a wild ride through San Francisco in a Porsche with another investment banker when I went to Washington to see Jon. When we went to lunch in his pickup truck with a baby seat in the back seat, I knew he was my kind of guy. He was real, honest and very smart. He and his wonderful family visited us in the mountains of North Carolina where we had a great time and became even closer.
My heart is sad to lose this special man way too early. God Bless your wonderful family and take care of them.

  4. No words can truly express how much I love and admire you, my brother.

You were kind, generous, caring, incredibly smart, and so witty. You loved your family deeply, and you became the heart of our family and your business.

Your zest for life drew people to you. You brought joy wherever you went, and you made people feel welcome through your friendships, your laughter, and your love of life.

You were taken from us far too soon.

It’s hard to call this a hole in my life, because you were never simply a part of my life, you were woven into the very fabric of it.

I have loved you every day of your life, and I will continue to love and admire you every day of mine.

    Rest peacefully, my brother.
